Julian Nagelsmann’s journey at the head of the German national team begins this weekend in East Hartford, Connecticut when Die Mannschaft takes on the United States in a friendly.

At the first pre-game press conference of his career as manager of Germany, Nagelsmann was confident that he was the right man for the job.

In a question asked by MailSport, Nagelsmann revealed that he took meetings with a number of clubs but decided to wait it out for a better offer, which came via the DFB.

‘I feel ready,’ Naglesmann said when asked if he felt prepared after only a few training sessions. ‘You’re a coach of a national team. You know that you do not have a lot of time to work with the team.

‘But I know that we have brilliant players, and all the players are well prepared because of the work in their clubs, and I hope they are well prepared now because of the work of my coaching staff.

When reflecting on a tumultuous past few months, Nagelsmann seemed like someone who had learned from the experience and grew from it.

‘At the end, the last couple of months were kind of crazy,’ he explained. ‘At the beginning was kind of surprising as well, but at the end it’s like that. In professional soccer, you have to deal with things like that.

‘After that, I had some meetings with different clubs, but I didn’t have the feeling that there was a club that could be the right next step. At the end, I decided to be a bit more on holidays and to recover, because I never had a situation like that – to have six months off in my career.

‘So at the end, I got some new power, and then I had a good speech with Rudy Völler and I decided to [take] this job because it’s a great honor for me to be the national coach, especially in my age.

‘I also feel kind of pressure because I want to be successful with the team, and I love watching fans in all streets and celebrate good games. We try to do this.

‘So, as I mentioned before, I think we were well prepared and we can do a lot of good games, and we try to start with it tomorrow. It how important.

Nagelsmann’s opposition, United States head coach Gregg Berhalter, sympathized with the newly appointed manager.

‘I remember my first matches international manager and thankfully, I had a month to prepare for it and he’s had three days,’ Berhalter said in a press conference Friday morning. ‘I know he’s tactically a very astute coach. And for us, it’s interesting to see what he’s going to do, how he’s going to interpret the talent that he has into a formation.

‘But you know, my guess is it will be some something that they’ve done before there will be some familiarity to what they’re doing in the field.’

With Germany set to host the Euros in just eight months time, now isn’t the greatest moment to undergo a coaching change. But Die Mannschaft have not looked like their typically dominant selves in the past five years.

After Joachim Löw’s tenure ended with a whimper, rather than a bang, the DFB hired Hansi Flick away from Bayern Munich in 2021 in the hope that he might make positive and immediate change in time for the 2022 World Cup.

But the Germans were unable to shake their shame from the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, going 1-1-1 in Qatar. An opening loss to Japan – caused by an 83’ winner from Takuma Asano, who plays for Germany’s VfL Bochum – was what ultimately doomed them.

Even in the matches after the World Cup, Germany did not look particularly strong under Flick – a sign that the division captured in the Amazon documentary ‘Germany: All or Nothing’ was still there.

Following the World Cup, Germany only won one of their next six fixtures.

After starting the year out with a win over Peru, Germany lost to Belgium before needing a big comeback effort from 3-1 down to rescue a draw against Ukraine.

Three straight loses to Poland, Colombia, and Japan followed – the latter being a 4-1 defeat that meant the immediate end to Flick’s tenure.

Flick went 12-7-6 in the 25 games he had in charge of the national team, with Nagelsmann hired in the weeks after the former manager was sacked.

Now, Nagelsmann starts over – having not managed a team since March of this year.

Nagelsmann, who was hired by Bayern Munich to replace the departing Flick in 2021, was fired by Bayern Munich during an international break – just before the team played Manchester City in the Champions League.

His final match in charge of Bayern Munich was a 2-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in which Bayern gave up two penalties in a game that saw five yellow cards distributed.

Nagelsmann had only lost three games in the Bundesliga up to that point and was undefeated in the Champions League, when Bayern’s then-leadership of Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic decided to sack him.

In his place, they grabbed Thomas Tuchel – who oversaw Bayern’s elimination from the Champions League by Man City and their knockout from the DFB-Pokal by the hands of SC Freiburg.

Bayern won the Bundesliga title at the end of the season, thanks in part to errors by Borussia Dortmund. Both Kahn and Salihamidzic were sacked hours after the title was won.

Over the summer, Nagelsmann had been linked with the managerial jobs at Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-German, and Real Madrid – but he turned them down.
