The winningest coach in Major League Soccer history has been placed on leave — with no timetable for his return to the touchline.
MLS on Tuesday put Bruce Arena on an administrative leave as the league investigates “inappropriate and insensitive remarks” allegedly made by the 71-year-old. The news comes during the Leagues Cup, where Arena‘s New England Revolution will face Atlas FC in the Round of 32 on Friday
What did Arena say?
The exact nature of the comments Arena allegedly made is not yet known. But clearly, something very disturbing made its way to the league offices for officials to take this action.
Arena joined New England in 2019, where he also serves as sporting director.
Arena, who coached the United States men’s national team for 148 games across two stints, has won the MLS Cup five times — twice with D.C. United, and three times with the L.A. Galaxy. He led the Revolution to the Supporters’ Shield in 2021, and New England has the second-most points in MLS this season, with 43 from 23 games.
Who’s taking over?
The Revolution have named interim replacements for Arena as the MLS investigation begins.
Assistant coach Richie Williams will take charge of the Revs‘ next game in the Leagues Cup. Taking over front office duties for Arena — a four-time MLS Coach of the Year — will be Curt Onalfo, who joined New England when Arena did, in 2019.
The MLS season resumes Aug. 20.
