Friendly Grocer upstages rivals ALDI, Coles, Woolworths and Costco to be named best supermarket

A little-known grocery chain has upstaged its biggest rivals Aldi, Woolworths and Coles to be crowned the ‘best rated supermarket in Australia’.

Friendly Grocer has taken out the top spot in the 2020/21 Finder Retail Awards after more than 10,000 shoppers voted for their favourite supermarkets.

Consumers were asked to rate their experiences of buying groceries, customer service, value for money, range of produce and overall satisfaction.

BEST OVERALL: FRIENDLY GROCER 

With more than 200 stores across Queensland, New South Wales, ACT and Victoria, Friendly Grocer was named the best overall supermarket in the country after scoring 4.5 stars out of 5.

The small supermarket chain offers a wide range of products including fresh produce, frozen foods, baked goods, household and pantry essentials and liquor. Its weekly specials also vary, depending on the store location. 

Costco came second with a 4.28 star rating, closely followed by Woolworths (4.22 stars) and Coles (4.21 stars).

BEST VALUE FOR MONEY: ALDI 

Known for offering lower prices, Aldi edged out major supermarket giants for value for money with a 4.38 star rating.

The discount supermarket stocks its own exclusive brands which are not tested on animals, and also sources ingredients from Australian farmers, producers and manufacturers.

The weekly ‘Special Buys’ catalogue, which offers one-off seasonal products, sets Aldi apart from every other supermarket, with crowds lining up outside the stores every Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Runner-up Costco finished second with a score of 4.32 stars, followed by Friendly Grocer (3.92 stars) and Foodland (3.92 stars).

What is Friendly Grocer?

Formerly known as Four Square, Friendly Grocer first opened its doors to consumers more than 60 years ago.

It was founded in New Zealand in the 1920s and expanded to Australia in 1956. The Friendly Grocer brand was introduced in 2006.

The small supermarket chain offers a wide range of products, including fresh produce, frozen foods, baked goods, household and pantry essentials and liquor. It also sells IGA home-branded groceries in all of its stores across Australia. Its weekly specials also vary, depending on the store location.

Despite being a small supermarket chain, Friendly Grocer, which is owned, run and managed by local people, prides itself on offering shoppers the best possible deals on products. 

There’s also an in-house takeaway kitchen that provides customers tasty meals at affordable prices.

BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE: FRIENDLY GROCER

Friendly Grocer was the top pick for offering the best customer service after receiving the highest score of 4.46 stars.

Despite being a small supermarket chain, Friendly Grocer, which is owned, run and managed by local people, prides itself on offering shoppers the best possible deals on products.

There’s also an in-house takeaway kitchen that provides customers tasty meals at affordable prices. 

In second place, Coles scored 4.26 stars out of 5, while Foodland and Foodworks tied in third place with ratings of 4.16 stars.

BEST RANGE OF PRODUCE: WOOLWORTHS 

Shoppers voted Woolworths as the best supermarket brand for offering a huge range of produce, with the highest rating of 4.29 stars.

The supermarket giant has more than 900 stores across the country, with the brand working closely with Australian farmers and growers to give shoppers the best products available in the market.

The chain sources 96 per cent of its fresh fruit and veggies and 100 per cent of its fresh meat from Australia.

Costco came second with a 4.24 star rating, followed by Coles (4.23 stars) and Friendly Grocer (4 stars).

BEST PRODUCE QUALITY: FRIENDLY GROCER

Friendly Grocer was crowned the winner in the produce quality category with a 4.35 star rating.

Apart from household and pantry essentials, Friendly Grocer offers baked goods, takeaway meals and liquors. It also sells IGA home-branded groceries in all of its stores across Australia.

Other brands that scored highly included Costco (4.32 stars), Coles (4.15 stars) and Foodland (4.12 stars).

MOST RECOMMENDED: FRIENDLY GROCER 

When it comes to grocery shopping, customers highly recommended Friendly Grocer to their friends and family. 

The small supermarket chain received a perfect score in the ‘most recommended’ category, beating Costco (4.8 stars), Aldi (4.7 stars) and Woolworths (4.51 stars).

In addition to its in-house takeaway kitchen, Friendly Grocer has an in-house bakery offering a wide range of goods, from fresh breads to pastries.

Local stores offer customers Australian-made products at the best price possible, which means store offerings may vary from day to day.
