Getafe fear they will be priced out of a move to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United on a permanent basis.
On signing Greenwood in the summer, the Spanish side negotiated a season loan with a January break clause that would instigate a £215,000 penalty should he return to United next month. Getafe would also receive 20 per cent of the transfer fee should United sell Greenwood to another club.
However, the move to Madrid-based Getafe has gone so well that the club are exploring how they can keep him beyond this season.
The option of a second season loan would be preferable and they would like to be able to sign him permanently but club sources are realistic that their limited budget may not be able to compete with rivals who are also taking keen interest in the 22-year old’s revival.
Their priority is to survive in La Liga this season but president Angel Torres admitted to radio station Cadena Ser: ‘We have not talked about price. We have talked about looking at the situation and seeing what they propose because there has also been a change of shareholding there at Manchester [United].

‘But we are still happy with the meetings and with the video conferences we have with them. It is still too early to consider either continuing for one more season or that they will propose a price and we will commit the whole [of the contract] because we have a percentage and to buy the rest. I believe a lot [in Greenwood].
‘From here, we continue to work periodically, we continue to meet with Manchester [United] to see if they are happy. The truth is that they are happy with the treatment, not only from the fans of Getafe, but also from the whole of Spain. Now we have to keep on defending him.
‘He didn’t play for 16 months and I think that in January, February he will be able to get the rhythm. He will give us satisfaction.’
Greenwood has scored four goals in 13 games this season and is working well under coach Jose Bordalas who has guided the side to ninth in La Liga.
Bordalas appreciates the improvement in level that Greenwood has brought to his squad but is also well aware that United subsidise the majority of the England striker’s wages while he is on loan. Getafe would have to revamp their finances to accommodate such a salary on a permanent basis.
All parties are happy for the loan agreement to continue as it stands.
