**Kenya’s High Court extended on Tuesday (Oct. 24) an order blocking the government from deploying police officers to Haiti.

This comes after the nation’s cabinet approved the deployment of 1,000 police officers as part of a multinational force.

The force aims to provide “operational support to the Haitian National Police, including building its capacity ,” according to the UN resolution passed on October 2nd.

The mission should be financed by contributions including that of the United States.

However, Kenya’s leadership in the mission and its involvement have been criticised at home.

Earlier this month, the country’s High Court granted an interim injunction in a case brought by opposition politician Ekuru Aukot, who argued the deployment was unconstitutional.

The case will continue on Nov. 9, according to Aukot.

Over a year ago, Haiti’s Prime Minister called for international help over the gang-related insecurity in his country.

More than 2,400 people were reported killed between January and mid-August of this year, according to UN statistics.

Haiti’s National Police who is reportedly outnumbered and outgunned has struggled in its fight against gangs who terrorize the population.
