Gary Glitter used to be one of the country’s biggest pop stars but that all soon changed after making headlines for the crimes he committed.

The disgraced singer committed a series of sex crimes against children both in the UK and overseas. Gary’s horrific crimes have been thrown back into the spotlight as ITV will air a new chilling documentary tonight titled Glitter: The Pop Star Paedophile.

ITV viewers will get an insight into the singer’s past double life and his horrifying actions. The show also highlights how the singer was able to evade justice for decades, which saw him free to travel abroad and continue offending.

How did Gary Glitter become famous?

Glitter achieved huge chart success in the 1970s and 80s and at the height of his fame, he scored 12 top 10 hits and sold over 20 million records.

He rose to fame at the age of 28 when he joined the emerging glam rock scene under the name Gary Glitter. He is well known for his songs such as I’m The Leader Of The Gang (I Am), I Love You Love Me Love. and Always Yours.

How did Glitter get caught?

Glitter suffered a huge fall when he was exposed as a child abuser. At the time he used his charismatic onstage persona to cover up his predatory behaviour off-stage.

His paedophilia ways first came to light in 1997 when he was caught with 4,000 images of child sexual abuse. He was first jailed in 1999 for downloading images of child abuse. He went on to be jailed again in Vietnam in 2006 for molesting two girls aged 11 and 12 before being released in 2008.

The singer was then jailed in the UK in 2015 for 16 years for sexually abusing three young girls between 1975 and 1980.

Last year he was automatically released from HMP The Verne – a low-security prison in Portland, Dorset, after serving half of his fixed-term determinate sentence, The Mirror reports.

Less than six weeks after he was put back in jail for breaching his licence conditions by allegedly viewing downloaded images of children.

Where is Gary Glitter now?

Now 79, he is currently being held in HMP Risley Cheshire and his sentence doesn’t expire until February 2031.

In February, his bid to be freed was rejected by the Parole Board, who cited his “lack of progress” made while in custody and on licence.
