I’d never think “oh I will pop to Hillhouse in Huddersfield tonight for tea.”

I admit to being a little bit intimidated by the area’s slightly bad rep over the years, and was not sure what to expect.

It’s certainly not an area I’d associated with fine dining in my head – but Kobane flipped all that on its head.

Eating out in Hillhouse had me feeling slightly apprehensive about the area because of old reports about its reputation being questionable. I’m not usually the kind of girl to get scared about things, I skydived out a plane for God’s sake, but this made me nervous. I think I’d built up in my head that it was going to the wild west.

I’d decided to try out the nearby Kobane restaurant, as owner Saadi Haidary, had told our YorkshireLive reporter, Andrew Robinson, in 2022 how much he has enjoyed enjoyed working in Fartown. And, he specialises in Mediterranean cuisine, which is one of my favs.

Mr Haidary, who opened his restaurant around 14 years ago, said: “The restaurant is doing really good. it is busy.

“I have been here since 1999. We are getting on very well with the community, it is a fantastic community.”

He said the restaurant had a wide range of customers. He added: “We have Albanians, Syrians, Polish, Hungarians, Romanians and English. We have a five star food hygiene rating.”

And now me.

I’d parked nearby under a suspicious looking dark railway bridge, and as the heavy rain poured down, it looked the perfect place for a crime to be committed – exactly like something off a horror movie. I was pretty terrified, but luckily I’d managed to drag a friend along for moral support.

We ran from the sketchy bridge into the light of the restaurant. The workers instantly greeted us with happy faces and showed us to a table. It’s like the anxiety lifted when I saw their welcoming faces.

We ordered lamb skewers and chicken skewers and OH MY GOD what a hidden gem. There was ridiculous amounts of food for just two people (we had to sit on a four person table just to fit it on). It was fresh, perfectly flavoured and so filling.

The lovely owners even brought us a free soup dish to try. If you get offered the free soup make sure you take it, it was divine! I honestly can’t explain how much of a little hidden gem this was – the food was amazing. It really goes to show you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, the restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside but inside its serving a culinary delight!

And, what was even better the whole meal – including drinks – came to less than £20. Honestly, the favours in the food were out of this world and I can’t urge you to visit enough.

Kobane restaurant truly is a hidden gem tucked away in an area of Huddersfield not known for its food.
