John Daly caught the eye during the final day of practice before the 2023 Open Championship, sporting stars and stripes shorts and a top emblazoned with the name of Donald Trump.

The 57-year-old, who won the Claret Jug at St Andrews in 1995, enjoyed a round alongside US PGA Champion Brooks Koepka.

Daly is no stranger to outlandish outfits and he turned heads again on Wednesday at Royal Liverpool in northern England.

He wore knee-length shorts which featured a pattern of stars and stripes, as well as a white top which, under another American flag on the right sleeve, read: TRUMP.

Daly was also seen smoking mid-swing and signing autographs for fans at Royal Liverpool as he went through his final preparations ahead of Thursday’s opening round.

The 57-year-old has won two majors – the 1995 Open Championship and the PGA Championship in 1991.

He will begin his 25th visit to The Open at 2.04pm local time (9.04am EST) on Thursday, alongside fellow American Taylor Moore and Englishman Danny Willett. Daly has not made the cut at The Open since 2012.

Over the course of a remarkable career, Daly has developed a reputation as one of the most entertaining players in professional golf.

Aged 29, the big-hitting American overcame Costantino Rocca in a play-off to land the Claret Jug. Since then, his outfits have become the stuff of legend and last year Daly hit the headlines with his on-course diet, too.

During the first round of the 2022 PGA Championship in Oklahoma, the 57-year-old smoked 21 cigarettes, drank 12 Diet Cokes and ate six packs of peanut M&Ms.

That day at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, he shot two-over par and then headed out to Hooters – one of his sponsors – to enjoy some wings before ending his night on the slot machines at a casino.

Daly told sports journalist Graham Bensinger in an interview in 2016 that he just hates drinking water and loves the taste of coke better.

‘I used to drink anywhere from 12 to 20 diet cokes a day,’ Daly told Bensinger. ‘I used to go to McDonald’s three to four times a day. To me, they always had the best fountain diet coke.

‘You know I don’t drink water. I hate water. I cannot stand drinking water.’

The golfer vowed in 2020 to cut back on Diet Coke and cigarettes after being diagnosed with bladder cancer. Two years later, he revealed the cancer was benign.

Daly has also previously battled gambling problems that he admitted cost him around $55million between 1991 and 2007.
