Shocked MasterChef viewers were left feeling queasy after a contestant suffered a gruesome knife injury on Tuesday episode of the BBC cooking show.

Just minutes into the show one vegan cook Charlotte, 42, accidentally sliced off the tip of her finger while preparing her food.

Just before she was seen telling judge Gregg Wallace about her cooking style as she made some spicy dumplings.

She said: ‘Vegan food isn’t just about hemp seeds and chickpeas’, before adding as she worked away: ‘I need to go as fast as I can do all the stuff I need to.’

But it appeared she went to fast chopping and managed to cut off the end of one of her fingers – which was then shown on the chopping board by the cameras.

She looked panicked and held her hand up as judge John Torode rushed over and said: ‘I’m sorry to say this, but you’ve actually cut the top of your finger off.’

John then said to the camera: ‘Sadly charlotte has cut herself and she’s had to leave the MasterChef kitchen for medical attention so she won’t be finishing off her dish.’

It comes after John and Gregg addressed rumours that they are set to quit MasterChef after it’s 20th series.

The duo have been hosting the show since it’s 2005 relaunch and have recently been hit by speculation they could bow out.

However, joining Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary on This Morning earlier this month, John, 58, and Gregg, 59, confirmed their plans to continue.

When ask by Alison if they plan on quitting, John said: ‘Alison stop it. Stop it… the great thing is that it is on BBC One, it is always on BBC One, it is on again tonight.

‘It is the quarter-final night, six extraordinary cooks going through to fight it out, and then we are back on now for the next seven weeks, BBC One, and of course, you can catch up on iPlayer.’

Dermot joked he was dodging the question like a politician, before Gregg confirmed: ‘No, it’s definitely not the last one!’

The new series will see fifty-eight passionate and talented hopefuls from all walks of life, such as a farmer, archaeologist and musical director, will show what they can do.

Viewers can expect to see the contestants, who hail from Dorset and Sunderland to the Scottish Borders and North Wales, serve up their food and cultural heritage in the hopes of making it to the final.

Speaking about the new series, John said: ‘I can hardly believe that we are into the 20th series of this unbelievably brilliant show.

‘It’s such a point of pride and celebration. I believe food brings people together and every year we’re fortunate enough to be able to help incredibly talented, hard-working people realise their dream and indulge themselves in the joy that is MasterChef.’

Meanwhile, Gregg said: ‘This is when the wave of ambition hits the rock of reality for these amateur cooks – and we are putting them through the most extraordinary challenges we’ve ever seen.

‘This show means business and we’re so lucky to be able to see the level of cooking inch higher and higher each year.

‘John and I are so happy to be part of a wonderful MasterChef community and, each series, welcome new ambitious cooks to show us what they can do.

‘2024 will be a celebration of the talent emerging from the country’s home kitchens – this year and from our time on MasterChef so far – I cannot wait.’

Urging people to apply themselves for the 21st series, John added: ‘This year is so exciting, with tough tests, incredible challenges and passionate cooks – as always. Twenty years on, MasterChef continues to show if you have a dream, just go for it!

‘The competition gets stronger and more exciting every year. Thanks for watching me and Mr Wallace. I hope you enjoy watching this 20th series as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.’
