Juventus have reportedly ‘opened talks’ to sign Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips on loan.

It comes amid reports this week that Newcastle had also been ‘confident of agreeing a loan deal‘ for the England midfielder.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side are looking to bolster their options in midfield with Paul Pogba facing a four-year suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.

Meanwhile, Nicolo Fagioli has also been banned for seven months after reaching a plea bargain with prosecutors over breaches of betting rules.

According to The Times, Juve, who currently sit second in Serie A, are ‘in talks over a potential loan deal for Phillips’ and claim that ‘Phillips wants to leave Man City in January’.

Mail Sport had reported earlier this month that the midfielder was interested in joining Juventus and was also open to a new experience in the Italian top flight.

The 28-year-old joined Man City in the summer of 2022 in a £45million deal from Leeds and has gone on to make 31 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.

While he has previously claimed that he wants to stay at the club and earn a place in City’s starting XI, Phillips has started just twice this season, playing 90 minutes during their Champions League group tie against Red Star Belgrade and their EFL Cup clash against Newcastle.

The former Leeds star, who’s contract expires in 2028, has made just four appearances this season in the Premier League.

His hopes of breaking into Guardiola’s first team have not been helped by City’s acquisition of Mateo Kovacic, who signed from Chelsea in the summer with Phillips subsequently dropping down further in the Spanish manager’s pecking order.

It comes ahead of next summer’s European Championships, with Phillips looking to get more game time under his belt to secure a space in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Southgate has previously said that players need to be getting regular club games to be selected for England.

Despite that, the Three Lions boss has continued to pick Phillips this season, with the midfielder featuring in their recent European qualifying games against North Macedonia and Italy.
