Klopp vows to pick strong Liverpool side to face Manchester United in bid to return to winning ways

Jurgen Klopp has vowed to pick a full-strength Liverpool team to face Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday as looks to cajole his side back into winning ways.

Liverpool’s slump hit a new low on Thursday when Burnley ran out 1-0 winners at Anfield, snapping their 68-game unbeaten run at home. Klopp’s side have picked up three points out of their last 15 available and have dropped down to fourth.

Yet the German seemed relaxed on Friday afternoon as he looked ahead to the United showdown and underlined his desire to inflict defeat upon Liverpool’s fierce rivals.

‘The game will be decided that night and we want to win the game, so that is how we will make the line-up,’ Klopp said, dismissing suggestions of rotations.

‘It’s a different competition and we want to go through and for that we have to play really well. United in a really good moment, we have to be ready.’

In contrast to Liverpool, United have lost just once in their last 12 matches in the League Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

But the Liverpool boss hoped the disappointment of their latest defeat is the motivation needed to his players to get their season back on track.

‘In how I understand it, the things I tell the boys, I didn’t tell them clear enough,’ Klopp said. ‘I have to change the way I tell the boys and we change the way we play.

‘Confidence is nothing naturally given and some things have to work out so that you can build confidence and things didn’t work out, at least in the final third in the last few games.

‘It’s not that it didn’t disappear and we can’t find it, we have to work and that is what you do. We didn’t get the results we wanted for a few weeks, parts of the game were good enough and parts were not. We have to improve the others.

‘I like to say and see that in each bad situation there is a chance for something and I see it that way but honestly I will not do that here now. I spoke to my players last night, I will today and it is nothing for a press conference, what I will say to them.’

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino dropped to the bench for Thursday’s defeat, while midfielders James Milner and Curtis Jones are vying for a return to the starting line-up at Old Trafford.
