Jurgen Klopp faces an anxious wait for news on the extent of Mohamed Salah‘s hamstring injury after the Liverpool star was forced out of Egypt‘s Africa Cup of Nations match on Thursday.

The forward will undergo an ultrasound and MRI scan to ascertain the damage after he left the pitch during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana in the Ivory Coast.

Salah looked close to tears as he left the pitch but was later seen smiling as he exited the stadium.

But Klopp admitted his ‘shock’ at the ‘intense’ moment Salah grabbed the back of his left leg following a run and then lay on his back to receive treatment.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s visit to Bournemouth, Klopp said: ‘We don’t know anything, we spoke last night and there was an assessment, they are doing that now and we will know more.

‘Of course in the moment it was a shock and I couldn’t see why he was hit by something so high intense.

‘Going down, you have these kind of hamstring injuries and he felt it and we know how rarely Mo goes off, or needs to go off, so it is definitely something and we will see but I don’t have any more information right now.’

Asked if Liverpool might have to send over their own medical staff, Klopp replied: ‘It will depend on the diagnosis.

‘There will be an ultrasound and MRI and then we will know what it is and then we will see.’

Liverpool were already braced for Salah’s absence until their February 17 fixture at Brentford, if Egypt were to make it all the way to the AFCON final in Abidjan.

But the fear now will be that he misses a far longer spell recovering from injury.

The Reds are already without a host of players. Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara, Kostas Tsimikas, Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Doak and Dominik Szoboszlai are injured. Wataru Endo is at the Asian Cup with Japan.

Egypt needed Salah’s stoppage-time penalty to rescue a point in their opening group game at AFCON against Mozambique.

Liverpool resume their Premier League campaign against Bournemouth on Sunday, before contesting the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Fulham.

Egypt coach Rui Vitoria said he had no concrete update on the extent of Salah’s injury after the game, with the winger set for further assessment.

He said: ‘We don’t know yet what the problem is. I hope it’s not a big problem.

‘It was difficult timing for us because in the second-half we could only make two substitutions. I think it’s not dangerous but let’s see.’

After an opening game draw, Egypt sit second in Group A ahead of their final fixture against group leaders Cape Verde, who play Mozambique on Friday.
