Former Manchester United greats insisted that the club should not sack Erik ten Hag despite the mounting pressure on him.

A 4-3 loss in Copenhagen, where United capitulated in two different spells, has intensified the pressure on the Dutchman.

Despite the club being bottom of their Champions League group and having lost nine of 17 games this season, club legends queued up to insist now is not the time to dismiss Ten Hag.

‘I think you have to stick with the manager but it’s a poor result. It’s a really bad result,’ Rio Ferdinand told TNT Sports.

Scholes said: ‘I still don’t feel like there’s that much pressure on him. He had a good year, he’s bought a little time in that respect, he’s had bad injuries, but nine defeats in 17 games is not good enough.

‘I know managers have been sacked in that second or third year. I don’t think we can afford to do it anymore. I think we’ve got to let this fella go with it. I think he’s been good up to this point.

‘He’s got a bit unlucky tonight with the sending-off. They’re going to play better teams than Copenhagen but I thought there was a little bit of fight there tonight, just lacking leadership. Maybe if Casemiro was in there things might be different.

‘Just a little bit of discipline and lack of concentration [was lacking]. Tiredness does affect your concentration. Dalot lost concentration and the next goal was a mistake. It’s just that collapsing, it’s hurting them at the moment. Once they concede one it seems like the second one is coming and they can’t win games if that’s going to happen every week.

Hargreaves added: ‘No [pressure on Ten Hag]. For 20, 30 minutes, considering the pressure they were under, they played some good football, tried to play out from the back, the spacing was better.

‘Nine losses in 17 games, they’re not good numbers. But they’ve got to stick by him. Keeping sacking managers is not the solution here.’
