Rotherham United have sacked manager Matt Taylor, Mail Sport understands.

Taylor, who did brilliantly to keep the Millers in the Championship last season, has been axed following Saturday’s 5-0 defeat away at Watford

It brings to an end Taylor’s 13-month reign, leaving the side 22nd in the Championship with two wins from their opening 16 games of the season.

A pocket of away fans at Watford booed at both half-time and full-time and chanted ‘We want Taylor out,’ something the now-sacked boss said he could ‘understand’ following a frustrating start to the campaign.

Taylor took over at Rotherham in October 2022 and signed a four-year deal, but there has now been an agreement to part ways.

It proved to be a tricky summer transfer window for Taylor as he looked to build on a successful first season in keeping Rotherham in the Championship.

Following three successive Championship relegations, Taylor guided them to safety with a 50-point haul, keeping them in the division for the first time since 2016.

But with major sums of money being spent by other teams, Rotherham found themselves out of the race for many of their targets.

‘I have not seen a market like it in terms of demand for certain positions on a football pitch. It does not make our job any easier,’ he told local media back in August.

Rotherham spent money on just one player, Sam Nombe from Exeter City, with free signings their focus with winger Andre Green, Cafu, Grant Hall and Dillon Phillips all joining without fees.

Taylor has tried to bring an attractive brand of football to Rotherham and has had them punching above their weight in the second tier.

But owner Tony Stewart has now decided a change is necessary heading into the international break.
