Manchester United and Liverpool approach Sunday’s huge Premier League meeting having dealt with mass injuries throughout the entirety of the 2023/24 season with contrasting degrees of success.

The Red Devils had hoped to build on last term’s finish of third but have largely left a lot to be desired in Erik ten Hag’s second campaign in charge, with a miracle now needed to qualify for the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, on the other hand, remain in the title fight alongside Arsenal and Manchester City despite being hamstrung by player absences.

Here’s the fitness situation for both sides ahead of the clash at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw has been a big miss for Man Utd. The England left-back has only managed to start 12 Premier League matches this season and his absence has been compounded by Tyrell Malacia also being injured all term.

Fitness issues continue to plague Ten Hag at centre-back. Lisandro Martinez has been unable to back up his impressive debut campaign at Old Trafford, while Victor Lindelof won’t return until late April at the earliest after suffering a hamstring knock.

Raphael Varane was substituted at half-time of the 4-3 loss to Chelsea and his replacement Jonny Evans only lasted 20 minutes before needing to be replaced himself. Understudy goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has also struggled of late, leaving Tom Heaton to sit on the bench on Thursday night.

Things are calmer on the injury front in midfield. Casemiro took a knock on Thursday night and will need assessing, but Ten Hag has most of his options fit and available elsewhere.

Mason Mount has scored since returning but suffered severe embarrassment back at his old stomping ground in midweek. He’s unlikely to start on Sunday, with Kobbie Mainoo, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes the expected midfield three.

The Red Devils also have their key attackers available, with Alejandro Garnacho the standout perfomer against Chelsea with two goals. Antony started ahead of Marcus Rashford and may get the nod again, while Rasmus Hojlund will hope for more involvement at Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial, who is set to leave Man Utd at the end of the season, is Ten Hag’s only absentee in attack.

While Liverpool manager Klopp still has strong options available to him in defence, the German remains hampered by Alisson, Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold all being missing.

Andy Robertson has returned in a big boost at left-back, while Caoimhin Kelleher and Conor Bradley have done well in goal and on the right.

Japan international Wataru Endo missed the 3-1 victory over Sheffield United on Thursday but there is hope he will be fit enough for Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford. There isn’t the same optimism over the availability of Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic, who aren’t expected to play again this term.

Alexis Mac Allister has been Liverpool’s star performer in recent weeks and he’ll feature in a more advanced role alongside Dominik Szoboszlai if Endo is fit to start.

There are no fresh injury concerns in the Reds attack, but Diogo Jota remains out with a knee complaint. The Portugal international has scored nine league goals this season, placing him behind only Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez among his teammates.

The front three has been largely consistent recently with Salah, Nunez and Luis Diaz regularly picked. That trio is expected to start again on Sunday.
