Manchester United players believe Erik ten Hag is resigned to the sack at the end of the season after noticing a change in his demeanour, according to reports.

Ten Hag is under mounting pressure and with United almost guaranteed to miss out on Champions League football next campaign, speculation over his future is rife.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are plotting sweeping changes this summer and this could extend to Ten Hag, although it is thought a decision has not yet been made.

However, The Sun have claimed that Ten Hag’s squad have spotted a different mood from their manager, suggesting he is aware the writing is already on the wall.

Co-owner Ratcliffe has refused to publicly throw his support behind the embattled  54-year-old and been reluctant to comment on the job Ten Hag has done to date.

The same publication also reports that Graham Potter is lined up to take over.

Potter, who has not taken up a new job since his Chelsea sacking, is said to have turned down a recent approach from Ajax and is admired by INEOS figures.

The Sun allege that Potter has met with Ratcliffe, who, alongside his right-hand man Sir Dave Brailsford, has already set in motion his ambitious new era at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag has been determined to shrug off talk over his future but with United sixth in the Premier League and 11 points adrift of fourth, the axe could well fall soon.

United also crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage following embarrassing defeats by Galatasaray and minnows Copenhagen.

They could yet win silverware, however, with their FA Cup dream still alive. Coventry await in the semi-finals, meaning United will be favourites to make it to Wembley.

Off the pitch, Ratcliffe is continuing to pursue moves for both Dan Ashworth, Newcastle’s sporting director, and Southampton transfer guru Jason Wilcox.

John Murtough stepped down from his role as United’s football director and is expected to be replaced by Ashworth, though compensation talks are continuing.
