Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Yellow card – Youri Tielemans

It’s a shaky start from Villa as Maritnez puts his defenders under pressure and the Belgian midfielder is forced into committing a foul. Chelsea waste the resulting set-piece with a training ground move that didn’t work.

HALF TIME: Bristol City 0-0 Nottingham Forest

We’ve been keeping an eye on proceedings at Ashton Gate but so far that game is goalless as well. The visitors have had the better chances so far but Bristol are defending resolutely.

Key updates as they happen down in the south west.

20:34, 45

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Sterling gets the better of Cash again but Kamara is there to support his team-mate and suddenly Villa break. Their move ends with Tielemans blasting a shot over the bar. Chelsea should be ahead, Villa nearly were.

20:29, 44

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Sterling latches onto a ball over the top but his touch is slightly heavy and the chance goes missing. Villa are playing a really risky high-line and if Chelsea can produce the correct ball then they will be through on goal.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

The Blues have dominated with over 70% possession in the match and this is one of the best first half performances we have seen from them this season, the issue is finishing their chances.

Madueke has been the biggest culprit of missing chances in this match so far and the longer the match remains goalless the more you feel Villa will grow into things.

20:21, 36

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Madueke runs onto a pass and sprints down the byline before trying to whip a cross into the box. The issue is Villa bunch so many players into their box that it’s become incredibly hard to find a blue shirt. Chelsea win a corner.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Chelsea want Watkins to be shown a yellow card for a foul as Villa try to take the sting out of the Blues’ attack at every possible opporutnity.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Sterling is wreaking havoc on Villa’s defence as he breezes past Cash again before finding Palmer. The Blues star plays in Madueke who has the goal gaping in front of him but hits it straight at Martinez. Poor finish.

20:09, 23

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Chelsea are enjoying their best spell of the game and the midfield duo of Fernandez and Caicedo is doing an excellent job of breaking up Villa’s attack and getting the ball forward quickly. You sense Chelsea need to make one of these chances count soon.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

What is Martinez doing?! The Villa goalkeeper gives the ball away on the edge of his area, Palmer is alert and gathers the ball. The Englishman rushes his shot as Martinez saves. It was a BIG chance for Palmer and you feel he had to do better with that effort.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

That’s far better from the Blues as Sterling rolls a pass into Fernandez who plays Madueke through into plenty of space. The 21-year-old has plenty of time but scuffs his shot and it’s a comfortable save for Martinez.

Goal disallowed: Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Luiz was offside for his goal and VAR disallows the strike. Chelsea are relieved but they must wake up because Villa are threatening. This is a young Blues side and the experienced players need to be doing a bit more to help out.

Goal – Chelsea 0-1 Aston Villa (Douglas Luiz)

Chelsea are asleep at the corner that is taken short and an eventual effort results in the ball ricocheting off the post and into Luiz who tucks in from close-range. Big calls for offside and a VAR check is in progress.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Yellow card – Thiago Silva

The Brazilian brings down one of his countrymen in Douglas Luiz and Villa win a free-kick in a relatively dangerous position. The free-kick is smart and gives McGinn a chance that is put behind for a corner.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Chelsea are getting some joy by trying to go over the top of Villa’s defence as Noni Madueke wins his side the first corner of the match. The set-piece fails to threaten as Chelsea take it short before Palmer is dispossessed.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Villa are keeping Chelsea guessing as they consistently look to be changing shape by switching between a back four and a back five. Tielemans has been dropping into the visiting defence at times and it appears to be causing Chelsea some difficulties early on.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

Raheem Sterling has to backtrack as Douglas Luiz surges through the heart of Chelsea and the Englishman has to push him off the ball with a foul correctly awarded.

Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

It’s an early chance for Conor Gallagher as he gets in behind Villa’s four-man defence but can’t fashion an attempt on goal. That’s an early warning sign for the visitors who appear to be playing a 4-4-2 formation.

KICK OFF: Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

We’re underway at Stamford Bridge. Can Chelsea keep their FA Cup run going against a knockout specialist in Unai Emery?

Here come Chelsea and Villa

The teams are walking out the tunnel at Stamford Bridge and kick-off is now just moments away.

Elsewhere in the FA Cup tonight

We will largely be focusing on Chelsea’s clash with Aston Villa tonight but will also be bringing you key updates from Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup fourth round encounter with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Meanwhile, Tottenham host Manchester City and live updates from that match can be found here.

What’s happened to Colwill?

Details are scarce but we can tell you that Colwill headed back down the tunnel at the very start of pre-match warm-ups with his knee already taped up. The 20-year-old previously missed less than 10 days of action with a shoulder injury in November and could now be set for another spell on the sidelines. Not good news for Chelsea supporters.

Chelsea INJURY replacement

Oh no this is not what Chelsea want less than 20 minutes before kick off as Levi Colwill has been injured during pre-match preparations, meaning Alfie Gilchrist comes on in his place.

The 20-year-old defender made his Blues debut in the final game of last season and was handed his first start for the club in their FA Cup third round win over Preston.

What a moment this is for the youngster to test himself against top Premier League opposition.

Chelsea’s £200m bench of talent

It says a lot about Chelsea’s transfer policy that their bench tonight boasts over £200m of talent – much of it looking like a huge overspend.

Mykhailo Mudryk (£88m) is the biggest spend amongst the substitutes and his near £100m arrival is now looking like one of the club’s most bizarre investments.

Ben Chilwell (£50m) is also expected to make an appearance tonight and is one of the few players that the Blues have done well to acquire in recent years despite his unfortunate injury record.

Armando Broja is another notable name that has so far failed to live up to his potential.

Villa have arrived at Stamford Bridge

The Villa entourage have arrived at Stamford Bridge and look to be in great spirits as they enter the stadium high-fiving children near the players entrance. Warm-ups will be underway shortly as we edge closer to kick-off.

Who is victory tonight most important to?

Villa ended their astonishing seven-year wait to make it past the third round when they beat Middlesbrough at the start of January, now they are aiming to qualify for the fifth round for the first time since the 2014/15 season when they made it all the way to the final before being beaten by Arsenal.

This Villa side feels different under Unai Emery and arrive at Stamford Bridge as probable favourites given their record this season. However, you suspect most fans would prioritise qualifying for the Champions League over continuing in the FA Cup.

For Chelsea this competition can show further progress is being made under Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentinian has got the Blues to the Carabao Cup final and now he wants to follow in Man United’s footsteps from last season by making the FA Cup showpiece as well.

Victory for the hosts would be another big boost to show Pochettino is making progress.

ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS

Villa name a similarly strong encounter as they seek to keep their FA Cup journey going.

The usual strike partnership of Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby start upfront while Youri Tielemans is expected to slot in alongside Douglas Luiz in midfield.

CHELSEA TEAM NEWS

The Blues have already made it to the final of the Carabao Cup and continue their journey in the FA Cup tonight against Unai Emery’s Villa.

Mauricio Pochettino has named a strong side for the Stamford Bridge encounter with Conor Gallagher staying as stand-in captain in midfield while Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer lead the line for the Blues.

Good evening and welcome

Good welcome and to tonight’s coverage of Chelsea v Aston Villa in the fourth round in the FA Cup. Kick off is at 7.45pm and we have plenty to build-up to until then.
