US sports continues to flex its financial muscle this summer. One of the NFL‘s newest stars, Joey Burrow, has made headlines after signing a contract from another planet.
The quarterback will earn $275 million over five seasons, $219 million guaranteed, in order to remain with the Cincinnati Bengals and help them in their bid to become Super Bowl champions.
Burrow blew up all previous NFL numbers and enters select company when it comes to American sports. The contract is the third-largest in terms of the major leagues, second only to two historic deals.
The first, Mike Trout‘s 12-year, $426.5 million deal with MLB’s Los Angeles Angels, and another recent one, that of Jaylen Brown in the NBA, who signed with the Boston Celtics for $304 million over five seasons.
Burrow surpassed, for example, Leo Messi by a wide margin. The Argentine star, who signed with Inter Miami, receives between $50 million and $60 million over the two-and-a-half seasons of his MLS deal, to put Burrow’s numbers with the Bengals into context.

The contract is understandable given Burrow’s play since leaving LSU. After becoming a national champion and the best player in the country, he’s had some big moments in the NFL. This, after first tearing the cruciate ligament in his knee as a rookie, and then reaching the Super Bowl as a sophomore and a conference finalist in the third.
Of course, there is another huge contract on the horizon. That involves a new deal for Japanese pitcher and slugger Shohei Ohtani, who could sign with a new team or remain with the Angels.
He has changed the way baseball is played and early estimates say his deal could reach 500 million. It remains to be seen if the deal will be impacted by an elbow injury that could require surgery.
