The creative team from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will soon be swinging into Colorado to accept an inaugural award at the Denver Film Festival.
The fest today announced a more complete lineup of events, screenings, honorees, special guests, podcasts and more for this year’s installment, scheduled for Nov. 3-12. Plucked to receive the inaugural Denver Film Festival 5280 Award will be the Spider-Verse team. The prize is designed to honor “exceptional cinematic work and collaboration to achieve new heights,” per officials. It will be presented to writers and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, executive producer Bob Persichetti, producer Christina Steinberg and senior animation supervisor Humberto Rosa following a screening of the film on Nov. 7 at the AMC 9 + CO 10.
Anthony Chen, whose credits include Ilo Ilo, Wet Season and Ah ma, has been tapped to receive the Denver Film Festival Excellence in Directing Award following the screening of one of his new films, The Breaking Ice, on Nov. 4 at the AMC CO 9 + 10. Chen is also the director of Drift, a fest selection that will screen on Nov. 7 and 8.
Meanwhile, Gabriela Cowperthwaite will receive the Denver Film Festival Barbara Bridges Inspiration Award following the closing night screening of I.S.S., a thriller set entirely in the confines of the International Space Station. The screening is set for Nov. 11 at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science Infinity Theater. Previous honorees of the prize include Rita Moreno, Abigail Disney and Donna Dewey.
The fest also revealed the roster of jurors who will judge films in competition. Actors Tawny Cypress (Yellowjackets) and Maxwell Whittington-Cooper (Rustin), podcaster and comedian Larry Wilmore (The Daily Show), Oscar-nominated makeup artist Donald Mowat, co-producer Bronte Payne (Saltburn) and festival director Lisa Dreyer (Fantastic Fest) will be joined on the jury by writers and editors Brooke Marine (The Cut), Richard Lawson (Vanity Fair), Daniel Daddario (Variety), Lawrence Yee (TheWrap), and Valerie Complex (Deadline).
Wilmore will also be on hand for a live recording of his podcast, Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air, on Nov. 10 at the Jacquard Hotel in Cherry Creek. Mowat will have double duty as well, as he’s set to participate in a conversation about his 40-plus-year career and the magic of hair and makeup on the big screen. That is set for Nov. 9, also at the Jacquard in Cherry Creek.
As previously announced, the festival will open with a screening ofCord Jefferson’s American Fiction starring Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae and Adam Brody. Other screenings include Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz’s Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, among others. Special awards will go to Michael Shannon and filmmaker Andrew Haigh, whose latest All of Us Strangers is generating awards buzz.
