A BRITISH tourist drowned while on holiday with his wife in Spain despite brave attempts by beachgoers to rescue him.

The 70-year-old man was taking a dip at a beach in Menorca when bystanders noticed him struggling and dashed into the water to help.

Holidaymakers watching the tragic scene from the beach called emergency services who rushed to the scene.

They spent half an hour trying to revive him on the sand but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The unnamed tourist’s wife had been with him at the time but stayed on the shoreline while he went swimming, according to local reports.

They are understood to have travelled to Menorca to celebrate his birthday.

The couple were staying at a residential property in Sant Lluis, south Menorca, near the Son Bou beach where he died.

Local reports said the unnamed man died on Monday afternoon and a post-mortem confirmed he drowned.

Last year another British holidaymaker died while travelling in Majorca in front of his partner.

The 62-year-old was pulled from the water by lifeguards and emergency responders.
