Spencer Matthews was crowned Star Baker during Sunday’s first episode of The Great Celebrity Bake Off after impressing with his artistic abilities.

Hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding will welcome 20 stars into the tent over the next few weeks in aid of Stand Up To Cancer, where their efforts will be judged by Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith.

Kicking off the special Munya Chawawa, Paloma Faith, Jodie Whittaker and Spencer went head-to-head, leaving the judges mostly unimpressed with their ‘terrible’ creations.

However, the television personality, 35, managed to sway the vote with his jammy biscuit Showstopper, complete with decorative detail.

During the episode, the Signature Challenge saw the contestants make cake pops, while the Technical tasked them with creating a batch of four identical pretzels.

Finally, for the Showstopper, the baker’s had to impress the judges with a giant biscuit portrait of Paul and Prue’s faces.

The contestants were first tasked with making cake pops, with Jodie’s sunshine-themed bake praised by the judges.

Paloma opted to make a quirky poo emoji shaped cake pop, flavoured with chocolate and caramel.

‘It’s a bit grainy but I quite like the flavour,’ Paul said of the singer’s sweet treats.

Elsewhere, Spencer created red velvet cake pops while Munja’s daring Ed Sheeran shaped bakes failed to impress after he presented them to the judges ‘raw.’

Next up, the celebrities were tasked with a Technical Challenge, a batch of four identical pretzels served with a red Leicester cheese sauce – to be judged blind.

Ranking the bakes from worst to best, Paloma came in last place with Paul commenting, ‘I’m not sure what these are, they are just rolls.’

Like Paloma, Jodie also struggled to get the shape right, landing her in third place while Spencer came in second after the judges praise the ‘flavour’ of his.

Paul and Prue were impressed by Munya’s pretzels after he ‘redeemed himself.’

‘They are all terrible,’ Paul remarked after the celebrities had presented their first two bakes.

For their final task the contestants had three hours to construct a huge biscuit portrait of the judges faces.

Prue said: ‘Hopefully they can shave 50 years off my face. I’m hoping to be absolutely astonished.’

Munya set out making a chilli and coco biscuit with the judges faces formed from butter cream.

Jodie decided to make a giant custard cream surrounded by iced party rings while Spencer opted to make a huge Jekyll and Hyde themed jam sandwich biscuit.

Paloma chose to make a simple chocolate chip cookie so she could ‘focus on perfecting the judges faces.’

Comedian Munya suffered a disaster when he burnt his biscuits  while Jodie struggled with her artistic abilities.

Paloma impressed the judges by taking ’20 years off’ Prue and making Paul ‘look like Zeus’ although her cookie wasn’t as impressive.

The judges hailed Munya’s biscuit flavouring but questioned his portraits while Jodie’s custard creams merited a similar response as she also struggled to decorate her bake.

Prue praised Spencer’s clever use of his jammy biscuit to pay tribute to Stand Up To Cancer and hailed his ‘tremendous’ painting skills.

‘That winner is Paloma, no it isn’t,’ Noel joked before announcing Spencer the winner.

‘He won Star baker because he actually got better and better although Jodie was a close second,’ Paul said.

Mel B, Oti Mabuse, Danny Dyer and Rhod Gilbert are among the stars taking part in Celebrity Great British Bake Off

Comedian Rhod, 55, was diagnosed with head and neck cancer after finding a lump in April 2022. In October he received his first clear scan.
