Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could return to work with Turkish giants Besiktas, according to a report.
Solskjaer has been out of a job since leaving the Red Devils in November 2021, though has been linked to various positions following his Old Trafford exit.
The latest gig the Norwegian has been tipped to take is with Besiktas, who recently parted ways with manager Riza Calimbay.
NTV Spor report Besiktas have ‘started negotiations’ with Solskjaer to succeed Calimbay, who left with the club sitting fifth in the Super Lig table.
Besiktas are without a win in domestic action this month, losing to Alanyaspor and city rivals Fenerbahce while drawing with Ankaragucu. They were also hammered 5-0 at home by Club Brugge in the Europa Conference League, though beat Lugano 2-0 on the final matchday to finish third in their group.
Solskjaer began his management career in charge of United’s Under-21 side in 2008, leaving his post to coach Molde in his native Norway three years later.
He returned to the UK with an ill-fated and short-lived spell at Cardiff City in 2014 before heading back to Molde in 2015. United came calling in December 2018 after they sacked Jose Mourinho, with Solskjaer initially appointed as a caretaker on a lesser-seen managerial loan. After turning their fortunes around, he was handed the job permanently in March 2019.
Solskjaer was praised for his man management and big game record during his time in the United dugout, but was criticised for his inability to end the club’s trophy drought. Despite a blockbuster summer 2021 which saw the club sign Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, the Red Devils failed to kick on and Solskjaer was let go early in the season.
Ralf Rangnick was named as United’s interim boss for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign and Solskjaer graciously offered him an honest assessment of the playing squad. Erik ten Hag was then unveiled as the club’s permanent manager in April 2022.
