Just under half of US states have not legalized sports betting. In some of these, you can play DFS for money if you’re of legal age. In addition, some of these states have taken no steps toward legalization at all. Others have bills to make sports betting legal in the works.

Good news for Virginians – sports betting in Virginia was recently legalized on a wide range of sites and apps. The state allows retail betting too. In the next several years, a few retail betting sites are expected to launch.

Without further ado, here are the states that have yet to legalize online sports gambling.

Alabama

This year, a bill to legalize fell through at the house of representatives, though the Senate had passed it.

Alaska

You can only play DFS in Alaska. In 2020, the governor proposed two bills to legalize sports wagering, but they expired.

California

There is little chance of sports betting becoming legal here in the near future. Have a look at the Golden State’s legislation to stay current.

Georgia

Georgia expects to discuss a new bill in January 2022.

Florida

The state and the Seminole tribe reached a compact in May this year.

Hawaii

Hawaii is highly unlikely to legalize sports betting in the foreseeable future. It has no land-based casinos either.

Kansas

In recent years, legislators have tried to legalize sports betting, with a few bills making some progress. For now, there are no changes.

Idaho

No lawmaker in Idaho has tried to legalize sports betting since 2018.

Kentucky

Although this state hosts the biggest horse race in the country, sports betting is not allowed. Progress might be made in 2022 as it’s an even year with a longer legislative session.

Maine

In Maine, things are looking up for sports betting in 2022.

Minnesota

While Minnesota lawmakers have expressed interest in advancing wagering, talks with the tribal casinos have stalled.

Massachusetts

There is one bill in the house and one in the Senate to legalize sports betting before the end of 2021. If they pass, online gambling could become a reality in 2022.

Missouri

Reportedly, Senator Denny Hoskins will file a bill to legalize. It will be reviewed in December 2022.

Ohio

Legislators in the Buckeye State are trying to pass it as soon as this year. The respective legislation has bipartisan support.

North Dakota

In 2021, lawmakersintroduced four bills on the matter, none of which survived in the house.

South Carolina

There is little chance of sports betting becoming legal here in the near future.

Utah

Utah is probably the state that’s least likely to legalize sports betting, ever.

Texas

In 2021, a few bills were discussed, possibly paving the way for future legalization.

Vermont

At this point in time, sports betting is illegal in Vermont. In 2020, a review bill was introduced, which was promising considering the state has neither racetracks nor a lottery. Since August of last year, little progress has been made.
