A new hearing about Owen Farrell‘s overturned red card will be held next week, as confirmed by the Six Nations.

The England captain was sent off in a World Cup warm-up match against Wales, but the red card was controversially rescinded after a hearing earlier this week.

However, an appeal has been lodged by World Rugby, and Six Nations confirmed that a new hearing over the matter will be heard by an independent committee ‘early next week at a time and date to be confirmed’.

‘The chair and members of the committee will be confirmed in the coming days’, they added.

Farrell was sent off in the clash with Wales for a high tackle on Taine Basham, with the referee’s ruling of a yellow card upgraded while he sat on the touchline.

Earlier this week, a disciplinary panel concluded that that ruling was flawed, and cleared him to play in any future matches, after it was judged that flanker Basham was pushed towards Farrell by Jamie George.

World Rugby prepared to appeal that decision, and it is that appeal that will be heard at some point next week, with the World Cup in France just weeks away.

Farrell was dropped from England’s World Cup warm-up clash with Ireland amid uncertainty over his availability.

Head coach Steven Borthwick confirmed that Farrell was due to start on Saturday in Dublin, but he will sit the match out, as England prepare for the possibility they may have to face some of the World Cup without their captain.
