Canelo Alvarez has said that the world will see he is the king of boxing following his fight against Jermell Charlo.

The pair are set to clash at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the status of undisputed super-welterweight of the world.

Alvarez is regarded as the fourth best pound-for-pound fighter in the world by The Ring, and is possibly the sport’s biggest name, but comes into the contest on the back of a tricky run of form.

Canelo attributes the difficult bouts to injury and not being quite fit enough for the contests. Despite whispers that he might be overhyped, the four-weight champion looks to hit back and show he is the king of the ring.

“Boxing-wise, I wasn’t 100 percent, but critics are always looking for something, aren’t they,” Canelo said to Showtime.

“And obviously, I agree with them, that I haven’t looked the last few fights like I used to. And I don’t want to just give a rebuttal. I’d prefer to show them. And in this fight, you are going to see the difference.”

He added: “I can’t wait for September 30. This fight, you’ll see I’m the king of boxing.”

Canelo’s current form

In his previous four bouts, the Mexican has been taken past the 11th round in each of them against Caleb Plant, Dmitry Bivol, Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder.

Bivol handed Canelo his second career loss, nine years on from his defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr, as the pair battled for the light-heavyweight belts.

Alvarez lost by unanimous decision with pundits believing he was rather flattered by the judges who all scored the contest 115-113 to the Kyrgyzstani.

Who is Jermell Charlo?

Charlo is an American fighter with an impressive record. In 37 contests he has won 35 (94.5%) and one career defeat in 2018 to Tony Harrison, which he later avenged.

Charlo holds the WBA WBC and WBO light-middleweight titles making him a unified champion.

At 5’11” tall and with many fights under his belt, Canelo is aware of the challenge he poses.

“He’s a fighter that hits hard,” Alvarez continued. “He’s a good boxer that knows how to use distance. That’s what makes him dangerous.”
