Manchester United broke three unwanted club records after their 4-3 defeat by Chelsea

Erik ten Hag‘s men had stamped out the Blues’ two-goal lead through goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes by the time the whistle blew for half-time, and a second goal from the former in the second half looked to have sealed victory on the road after the weekend’s draw with Brentford

But a late penalty conceded by Diogo Dalot handed momentum back to the hosts, and after Cole Palmer levelled from the spot in stoppage time, the boyhood United fan heaped yet more misery onto the Red Devils with a match-winner struck just 82 seconds later.

To make matters worse, United’s leaky defence ensured they went over the 500 mark for shots conceded this season, their most ever.

225 shots have come in 2024 alone which makes it the club’s most in a 10-game run.

The loss against Mauricio Pochettino’s side was also United’s 17th defeat across all competitions, their most since the 1989-90 season.

United fans took to social media to discuss who is to blame, with some pointing the finger at Ten Hag while others claimed the players are at fault.

YouTube presenter Flex told Rio Ferdinand’s Vibe with Five channel:  ‘It’s not just Ten Hag, the players won’t get away with it.

Another United fan said: ‘I think that this reflects badly on tactics. The best teams concede very few chances. Also, Onana has been quite poor this season.’

A third fan came to the defence of Onana, saying: ‘Nah it’s just that Onana gets too much hate. He’s not even the one that should be bantered. It’s Ten Hag and his rubbish tactics. I’m not seeing enough Ten Hag banter and that’s almost criminal.’

Another added: ‘Using Onana’s face on a stat where he’s the only player who can’t be blamed for it is kinda wild. We’ve conceded so many shots without conceding so many goals, so he’s obviously playing well.’

Following defeat at Stamford Bridge, United remain sixth and are nine points behind fifth-placed Tottenham and 11 adrift of Aston Villa in the race for Champions League football next season.

The Red Devils still have a chance of lifting a trophy this season ahead of their FA Cup semi-final clash with Championship outfit Coventry later this month.

United have an unenviable task in their next fixture as they welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday, who will be simultaneously determined to maintain their lead at the top of the table and avenge their FA Cup quarter-final defeat last month.
