Levi Colwill’s future has been a major sub-plot during another dizzying transfer window for Chelsea, but the young defender’s destiny has finally been settled.

The 20-year-old spent last term on loan at Brighton and impressed under Roberto De Zerbi as the Seagulls earned Europa League qualification, while the Blues sunk to the lowly depths of 12th with Frank Lampard last in post.

However, Mauricio Pochettino is now in the dugout and has plans for Chelsea’s youngsters including Colwill, resulting in the defender signing a new six-year contract at Stamford Bridge with the option of an extra season.

Here’s how much Colwill will now earn compared to his Chelsea teammates, some of whom are on astronomical wages.

Colwill was earning a relative pittance during the 2022/23 season, which was his first campaign with top-flight football having spent the previous term with Huddersfield.

The centre-back was said to be taking home £5,000 a week on his old contract, which had been due to expire in 2025.

However, Colwill’s salary is thought to have jumped all the way up to £100,000 a week with his new deal, which places him a bit closer to established footballers like Romelu Lukaku, Raheem Sterling and Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea’s gargantuan spending has been well documented since Todd Boehly’s takeover last year. Legions of players have been signed and a similar number discarded as the Blues look to start anew after a premature end to Thomas Tuchel’s reign and Graham Potter’s embarrassing 31-game stint.

Touted stars of the future like Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku have arrived recently and each been handsomely rewarded with lucrative contracts. Colwill’s new deal turns his weekly wage into a six-digit payment, though he’s not alone in that regard in the Chelsea squad.

The Blues have been one of the Premier League’s powerhouses for the better part of 20 years and previous owner Roman Abramovich’s egregious wealth meant the west London side were able to pay stars like Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and John Terry bucket-loads during the club’s peak.

That figure of £100,000 a week sees Colwill earn fiscal parity with teammates like Carney Chukwuemeka, Mudryk and Hakim Ziyech, as per Spotrac, though he remains far off top earners like Lukaku, Sterling and Fernandez.

While Lukaku has come nowhere near repaying that reported £325,000-a-week salary structure since rejoining in 2021 and is doing everything leave, the outlay on Colwill will keep the promising defender at Stamford Bridge for many years to come and should prove a much more worthwhile investment.
