Southampton boss Russell Martin claimed to have ‘no interest’ in greeting Rishi Sunak, who had made the trip to St Mary’s to watch the Saints against Plymouth Argyle on Friday night.

Martin’s side extended their impressive unbeaten run to 17 games with a hard-fought 2-1 win thanks to goals from Carlos Alcaraz and Che Adams.

Sunak, who is from Southampton and supports the team, watched on as the squad climbed to within three points of the Championship’s automatic promotion places.

But after the game it was the brutal snub from Martin that was on everyone’s lips. The former Swansea boss was quizzed post-match on whether the deeply unpopular Prime Minister had been down to speak with the players.

‘He might have come down, but I have absolutely no interest in saying hello.’ He told the BBC. ‘How’s that for honesty.’

He later added: ‘I just made a joke on BBC that I had no interest (in Sunak being present) I am a football manager, and I’m not sure we are aligned on too much politically.

‘But I know he is a fan, and I hope he enjoyed watching the team. I didn’t meet him, I’m sure some people were excited about it but we had a job to do, win a match, and we did.’

It is the first time Sunak has visited St Mary’s this season following their relegation to the second tier. He would have been impressed with his evening’s viewing as Southampton bolstered their case for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Martin praised his players performance for the first 90 minutes of the game but he admitted that they lost control during the lengthy additional period.

‘The players were so good for the 90 minutes – but the last seven minutes were mental.

‘I know they feel very aggrieved about the decision, but if they had gone 1-0 up I don’t think it would have been hugely deserved. We were so dominant and should have scored earlier.

‘It was a big learning curve for the lads but I am not going to get too annoyed with them, because overall they were so good. They themselves were a bit flat, which I love.’
