Leading up to the 2024 Golden Globes, May December was a frequent topic of discussion as observers wondered why the movie, about an actress shadowing a couple whose large age gap made tabloid headlines, was submitted as a comedy. Producer Will Ferrell, who delivered a memorable moment in his best actor presentation with Kristen Wiig, and star Natalie Portman even fielded questions about whether May December was a comedy on the Globes red carpet. But near the end of Sunday night’s awards ceremony, the question may have shifted to “Is May December going to win anything tonight?” The answer was no.

The Netflix movie went into the Globes up for four awards but went home empty-handed. It was perhaps most surprising that Charles Melton, who has been collecting a series of awards from critics groups lately for his performance in the film, lost best supporting actor, with that award going to Oppenheimer star Robert Downey, Jr., perhaps the first indication of the Christopher Nolan film’s dominance Sunday night.

Other top nominees that were shut out include fellow Netflix title Maestro, up for four awards, and A24’s critical darling, Past Lives, up for five awards.

Warner Bros.’ Barbie did win the new category of cinematic and box office achievement as well as best original song, which went to awards favorites Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, and its stars got a fair amount of airtime during the CBS telecast, but considering that the summer movie phenomenon went into the Globes with the most nominations of any movie with nine nods, the fact that it only won two awards and missed out on acting, screenplay and directing awards, not to mention the top prize of best motion picture musical or comedy, was surprising.

Similarly, Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon had as many Golden Globes nominations as Poor Things, with seven nods, but won only one award, for star Lily Gladstone, as it was bested in the best motion picture drama category by Universal’s five-time winner Oppenheimer.

And Anatomy of a Fall‘s screenplay win, over Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, Killers and Past Lives — all of which seemed like likely winners — was unexpected.

On the TV side, Only Murders in the Building went into the night with the second most nominations, five, tied with The Bear. But while the FX series won three awards, Hulu’s Only Murders failed to win a single prize.

Ted Lasso made its first major televised awards show appearance for its third and final season at the Golden Globes (the 2023 Emmys were delayed due to the writers and actors strikes last year and won’t air its televised awards show until Monday, Jan. 15). However the show surprisingly failed to win a single Golden Globe despite star Jason Sudeikis winning the Golden Globe for best actor for the Apple series’ first two seasons. The final season of HBO’s Barry also failed to win a single Golden Globe.

As the Creative Arts Emmys took place across town this weekend, HBO’s The Last of Us swept up eight awards, but the series wasn’t as lucky at the Golden Globes, failing to win a single trophy.

And while the Golden Globes have historically liked to recognize new TV shows, including ones that debuted after the Emmy eligibility period ended, it didn’t bestow any awards on fall debuts Lessons in Chemistry, Fargo or Fellow Travelers.
