The Cincinnati Bengals have been worried about Joe Burrow for several weeks now, after he suffered a calf injury in a practice back on July 28, but they can now breathe easy.
There is good news as the quarterback has insisted he is ready to play and that he should be able to start their Week One clash with the Cleveland Browns.
“I’m ready to go, I’m expecting to play,” Burrow said on Wednesday, speaking to the media after practice.
“I mean, we’re going to see how these next couple of days play out, because you never know with these things, but I’m expecting to play.”
Burrow‘s coach Zac Taylor is also cautiously optimistic that the quarterback can start in Week One.
“I thought today was a really good day for him,” Taylor said.
“It was encouraging to see, so we’ll just take one day at a time.
“He looks good, but I think it’s wise to take it day-to-day right now.”
Bad news for Patrick Mahomes and the Bengals’ AFC North rivals
Burrow‘s optimism over his injury is bad news for Patrick Mahomes, as these two quarterbacks are the leading contenders to win the MVP award for the 2023 season.
Mahomes is +600 to retain his MVP prize, while Burrow is second in the odds list on +750.
Had Burrow missed the start of the season, that would have seriously hurt his chances of taking this individual honor.
His presence is also especially bad news for the Bengals‘ AFC North rivals, as they go up against the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens in the first two weeks of the season.
They don’t tackle the Pittsburgh Steelers, though, until far later in the season, with games on November 26 and on December 23.
It really does promise to be a fascinating race in the AFC North.
