Full Story

Harry Belafonte, the legendary Hollywood star, iconic singer, and civil rights activist, passed away on Tuesday at his home in Manhattan’s Upper West Side at the age of 96 due to congestive heart failure. Belafonte was renowned as one of the most influential entertainers of the 20th century, and he paved the way for other Black performers such as his late friend Sidney Poitier.

Belafonte became the first Black leading man in Hollywood and appeared in numerous well-known films such as “Carmen Jones” (1954), as well as in several television variety specials. He also delved into film production, producing movies like “The World, the Flesh and the Devil” and “Odds Against Tomorrow” in 1959. However, Belafonte was dissatisfied with the roles he was offered in the 1960s, which prompted his involvement in the civil rights movement where he worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., advocated for charitable activities for underdeveloped African nations, and denounced South Africa’s apartheid policies.

Belafonte made his mark in the music scene as a nightclub singer and recorded numerous albums, earning the moniker “King of Calypso” with his popular hit “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song).” Throughout his career, he won an Emmy, a Tony, two Grammys, and the Recording Academy’s lifetime achievement award in 2000.

Belafonte is survived by his third wife, Pamela Frank, daughters Shari, Adrienne, and Gina, and son David. The artist was previously married to Julie Robinson and Marguerite Belafonte.

Belafonte’s passing is a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry and civil rights movement. His contributions and impact will never be forgotten, and his legacy as a trailblazing artist and passionate activist will continue to inspire future generations.
