Supermarket giants Asda and Morrisons have both issued an urgent recall over a food product which could be contaminated with a bacteria which causes a rare infection.

Both supermarkets sell a Taleggio cheese which could contain listeria. But if you didn’t see the recall notice fast enough and you did eat an affected product, the chances are you will be okay but it’s still good practice to keep an eye out for any unwanted symptoms of illness which can result from ingesting listeria, in the unlikely but possible event that it does happen.

Listeria is a type of bacteria which can contaminate many foods. People who eat foods affected with Listeria can develop an infection called listeriosis.

It’s particularly bad news for older people, pregnant mums or their newborns and those with weak immune systems but it can make anybody ill.

These are the symptoms of Listeria to look for:

People who are pregnant typically get fever and flu-like symptoms such as aches and fatigue.

People who are not pregnant get:

  • Fever
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as muscle aches and fatigue
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Seizures

Symptoms in non-pregnant people can be severe and in the US, almost 1 in 20 people with invasive listeriosis die of the infection.

Listeria can also cause intestinal illness. This normally starts within 24 hours of eating contaminated food and lasts 1-3 days, according to the US Center for Disease Control. Symptoms of this include diarrhoea and vomiting.

The NHS adds: “Listeriosis is usually caused by eating food contaminated with listeria bacteria. Listeriosis is a rare infection caused by bacteria called listeria. It usually goes away on its own, but it can make some people seriously ill.

In most people, listeriosis has no symptoms or only causes mild symptoms for a few days, such as:

  • a high temperature
  • aches and pains
  • chills
  • feeling or being sick
  • diarrhoea

“If you get listeriosis while you’re pregnant, there is a risk it could cause miscarriage or stillbirth.

“In babies and people with a weakened immune system, listeriosis can sometimes lead to serious and life-threatening problems such as sepsis or meningitis.

“For most people, listeriosis is mild and gets better in a few days.

“You can usually look after yourself at home by resting and drinking plenty of fluids.

“If you’re at a higher risk of getting seriously ill (for example, you’re pregnant or have a weakened immune system), you may need antibiotics.”

The recalled products which could contain Listeria bacteria:

Asda has recalled its ASDA Extra Special Taleggio cheese, dated April 14 2024.

Morrisons has recalled the same product, which looks like it may come from the same supplier; Morrisons Best Taleggio 200g, for the same reason.

Asda said the Date Code: affected is 14/04/2024 and the barcode reads 5054781054399.

It said: “ASDA are recalling ASDA Extra Special Taleggio Date Code 14th April 2024 because there is a potential that some packs may contain Listeria monocytogenes.

“What should you do? If you have purchased ASDA ES Taleggio with date code 14-04-2024, please bring it back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund. You do not need your receipt.

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Morrisons is recalling Morrisons Best Taleggio with a Use By 14th April because there is a potential risk that some packs may contain Listeria.

It said: “Please do not eat this product and return it to your nearest store for a full refund. We don’t need a receipt.

“No other products are affected by this issue. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and assure customers of our continuing commitment to the highest standard of product quality and safety.”
