A drone show took place at St James’ Park before Newcastle’s game against PSG on Wednesday night.

The game will mark the return of Champions League football to the ground for the first time in over 20 years with the Magpies playing their first home game in this year’s competition.

They began their European campaign with a 0-0 draw against last season’s losing semi-finalists AC Milan at the San Siro a fortnight ago and face potentially an even tougher test this week.

PSG, though haven’t enjoyed major success in European football and are yet to win the Champions League, will arrive with an expensive squad including Kylian Mbappe on the back of a 2-0 win in their first group game.

But they and the fans in the area were welcomed by a drone show from sponsors Sela ahead of Wednesday’s game, with the logo, player shirts including Sandro Tonali and Kieran Trippier and the Magpies badge shown.

Some supporters may have caught a glimpse of what was to come in the show, with 500 drones seen in the air above the ground on Sunday evening.

They spelt put the words ‘we’re back’ and also formed the image of a Newcastle shirt, with two more shows held Monday night.

It seemed apparent that they are simply run-through an ahead of the main event, and that was the case with the main showing up for all to see in the evening.

‘We wanted to create a little surprise for fans to celebrate the return of the biggest nights in European football to St James’ Park,’ Ibrahim Mohtaseb, Senior Vice President of Sela, said.

‘The fans, the club and the players deserve these special moments and I hope we’ve added to what will be an unforgettable occasion for everyone who loves Newcastle United and this city.

‘Creating spectacular experiences is at the heart of what Sela does every day as a company and we’re looking forward to contributing to more memories over the course of this landmark season.’

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has admitted he is looking forward to the atmosphere at the ground.

‘We’re determined to try to do well, and one thing I’m absolutely certain about is the atmosphere will be as good as I’ve ever experienced here,’ he said.

‘I know the supporters will get behind us and then whatever we do from there will depend on what happens afterwards.

‘We’re really looking forward to it, we’re looking forward to the challenge that it will bring. It’s going to be an extreme test, but one that we can’t wait for.’
