Liverpool fans love a hero. From Kenny Dalglish to Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, those they truly adore will never walk alone.

Darwin Nunez is the Kop’s latest cult figure. The difference is he’s still being feted as a striker on a run of one goal in 16 matches.

At most clubs, that would get you run out of town. At Anfield, the love and encouragement towards him is palpable.

The chants of ‘Noo-nez, Noo-nez’ were ever-present during Wednesday night’s 2-1 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg win against Fulham.

They were loud when the Uruguayan was on the bench and Liverpool trailed 1-0 to Willian‘s opener.

He received a rapturous ovation when introduced after 56 minutes and the man they affectionately call ‘Chaos’ on Merseyside did help lead a comeback.

His touch gave local boy Curtis Jones the chance to level with a deflected shot. As Jones wheeled away to celebrate, the chant resounded ‘Noo-nez, Noo-nez’.

It was the same again three minutes later when Nunez crossed for Cody Gakpo to produce a cute match-winning finish. As the Dutchman held his arms aloft to take the plaudits, the song was the same: ‘Noo-nez, Noo-nez’

Of course, Nunez isn’t judged on goals alone. His energy, effervescence, thirst for a physical battle and unselfishness to set up team-mates mean he’s a constant threat whether he puts the ball in the net himself or not.

Against Fulham, he could have done, a rasping shot that was tipped onto the bar by Bernd Leno followed by another excellent smother from the goalkeeper at Nunez’s feet late on.

Never mind, Klopp is happy with him. Last season, Nunez was more often a substitute than a starter. This time it’s the other way around, Wednesday night was an exception rather than the rule and you can expect him to start in their next game at Bournemouth.

‘He plays outstanding,’ said the Liverpool manager of his £64million unpolished diamond. ‘There are so many things I love. He would have started tonight but he had cramps in the last game.

‘I don’t know how to explain the Darwin situation (about lack of goals). I am so happy with the crowd, how they take him, but he can not be more unlucky. He does everything right but doesn’t score but still sets up the other goals. That is special.’

Nunez is already hugely popular on Merseyside. Imagine what he’d become in the eyes of the fans if he starts getting even a fraction of the success enjoyed by King Kenny and Stevie G.
