This terrifying footage shows a suspected drink-driver heading the wrong way down a Yorkshire motorway as HGVs swerve to avoid a head-on crash.

South Yorkshire Police have released the shocking footage today, which shows a driver on the wrong side of the M1 Southbound at Junction 31. HGVs and cars can be seen driving past on the opposite side of the motorway, narrowly avoiding a potentially catastrophic head-on crash.

The force received “numerous calls” from worried drivers who saw the car on Saturday, March 9 at 2.45am. Meanwhile, cameras from National Highways captured the car join the motorway and driving for two junctions before leaving the carriageway.

It didn’t take long for South Yorkshire officers to catch up with the driver, who was breathalysed. He blew 125mg – the legal limit is 35mg.

Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings said: “This sequence of driving could have had catastrophic consequences and caused a fatal collision as poor judgment meant the vehicle’s erratic driving continued for two junctions.

“Alcohol seriously affects your judgement and reaction time, and you are four times more likely to be involved in a collision if you are under the influence of alcohol.

“Stopping those who pose a risk on our roads is daily business for officers across South Yorkshire. During April we are supporting the Fatal4 campaign, raising awareness of the main contributing factors of fatal and serious collisions.”

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and dangerous driving. He has been bailed while investigations continue.
