This has been better stuff by the Hawks, who have played with more dare and intent this quarter. The clearances have been even, and they are +7 for contested possessions.

The ball has lived in thee Hawks’ forward half for lengthy periods.

It has not translated to the scoreboard in terms of goals but at least it has stopped the Dees’ scoring.

Steven May is in trouble here. He copped a big blow in the ribs on his right side from Mabior Chol, who attacked a marking contest with plenty of gusto.

Chol’s efforts created a spillage, allowing Hawthorn to ferry the ball inside 50 for a goal to Luke Breust.

Hawks veteran Luke Breust has finished a flowing move forward with a goal from close range.

In the lead up, Mabiol Chol flew high into Demons defender Steven May and his knee looks to have connected with May’s side/ribs.

Chol knocked the ball down and helped win it back as the Hawks powered forward. May has now gone to the bench for treatment but is in some pain.

Dees 41, Hawks 14 with 28 seconds until HT.

The Hawks have become much more competitive this term and are winning plenty of contests.

But for all the footy they are winning, they have yet to turn them into chances at goal.

Young Hawk Nick Watson just missed a shot at goals which he would usually kick.

Dees 40, Hawks 8 with five mins to go in Q2.

Kysaiah Pickett continues to fire at the MCG.

On the last play he sprinted out on the lead and slid forward to take the mark low on the ground.

He went back and kicked the goal, his third major, and it’s clear Hawthorn can’t keep with him.

Connor Macdonald has marked deep in the forward line and kicked his club’s first goal after a more than a quarter of play.

The Hawks are more competitive this term, so they have fine-tuned some of the areas they were missing the mark in during the opening term.

Dees 33, Hawks 7 with 15 mins to go in Q2.

The Demons have dominated that quarter-time as Hawthorn’s tactics have failed and their attempts to physically challenge Clayton Oliver only fired up Melbourne’s midfielders.

Pickett, Oliver and many others have taken hold of this Hawthorn side and they will need a big turnaround to get back into this match.

The Hawks have tried a footy variation of the soccer’s parking the bus defence and it has only resulted in the bus running over them and steam-rolling down the hill.

Hawthorn are playing very much a soccer game style.

They’re intent on retaining possession, chipping the ball from side to side without taking any territory. It’s almost as if they do not want to put the ball in contest mode.

There are several problems with this style. Melbourne’s defence is extremely well-organised, the Hawks cannot find any holes and from 80 possessions, they have just four entries inside 50.

When the ball is turned over, Melbourne are running the ball with ease through the Hawks’ defensive zone. There is so much space.

We’ve only just entered time on but already it’s looking ominous.

Dees 32, Hawks 1 with five mins to go in Q1.
