TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney has addressed criticism surrounding her sponsored social media posts for Nike and Bud Light. The transgender activist had been absent from social media for a couple of weeks and returned on April 27 to express her feelings on the discourse. Dylan stated that while she had been offline, people had been saying a lot about her, some “so far from my truth” that she did not even recognize who they were referring to at times.
Dylan mentioned that it was difficult for her to hear adults accuse her of being “too feminine and over-the-top” when those were the same things she had been called during childhood. Nevertheless, Dylan stated that being a theater person and being camp was just part of her personality, adding that it always had been. Despite online vitriol and backlash from people such as Caitlyn Jenner, Dylan emphasized that she still had her faith, which she was trying to hold onto.
Dylan thanked her supporters and fans for “seeing my humanity” and expressed her embarrassment for being nervous that her followers would begin to believe the things people were saying about her. She concluded by saying that she would start posting on various other topics beyond gender identity with the aim of continuing to make people smile. Dylan jokingly stated that in her next life, she wanted to be someone non-confrontational and uncontroversial.
