Artist’s impressions have revealed what Huddersfield railway station will look following a huge project to redesign the internal layout.

Passengers are being warned of major disruption to train travel from Huddersfield from Good Friday to Sunday, April 7, due to work taking place. Replacement bus services are being laid on, with Huddersfield station either closed or passenger access being limited. Passengers are urged to check before they travel due to route diversions and bus replacement changes.

Work is taking place as part of the major TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU) which will see engineers working inside the station. The work is focused on the roof canopy and the creation of a new bridge deck on the Huddersfield viaduct over the A641 Bradford Road, and track renewals in the Deighton and Mirfield areas.

The plan is for a revamp of the internal layout of the Grade I listed station, with extra care needed because of the listed status. Already the timber tearooms have been removed so that they can be restored.

The plans include two new platforms and the extension of existing platforms to improve capacity. A new footbridge and lifts will be installed and the roof restored. More toilets will be installed.

The trainshed roof is one of the few remaining large-scale ‘Euston roof’ examples on the operational railway network. The work involves grit blasting, painting and re-roofing.

Paul Sumner, senior sponsor on the TRU, said: “Our teams will be working around the clock to deliver this vital series of upgrades. The revamp of Huddersfield station and the rail works in the surrounding areas form a pivotal part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

“I’d like to thank customers for their continued support and remind everyone that services changes will be in place, so to please check before they travel.”

Chris Nutton, for TransPennine Express, added: “These improvement works are key to the overall modernisation of the railway that will be taking place as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, which will help deliver a faster and more sustainable service for our customers who travel between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.

“We’d like to thank our customers in advance for their patience while this work takes place. To keep customers on the move, there will be some changes to our services, including diversions on some routes and rail replacement buses on others, and we advise customers to check carefully before travelling. We’ll have extra staff on hand at stations to help customers who are travelling on days affected by this work.”

The route upgrade aims to improve the rail service between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York, with more frequent, faster and more reliable trains. The 70-mile TransPennine main line serves 23 stations.
