Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to fantasy epic Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms, one of China’s biggest films of the year.

Directed by Wuershan (Painted Skin: The Resurrection, Mojin: The Lost Legend), the film is the first installment in the planned Fengshen Trilogy, a three-part feature adaptation of the classic Chinese novel by Xu Zhonglin. It stars Kris Phillips (The Monkey King 2), Li Xuejian (The Wandering Earth II), Huang Bo (Journey to the West), Yu Shi (Born to Fly), Chen Muchi, Ci Sha and acclaimed newcomer Naran.

Among the Beijing film industry’s top-earning titles this summer, Kingdom of Storms has earned $375 million in China and remains on release.

Well Go will put the film out in North American theaters on Sept. 22, with special Imax preview showings available in select locations on Sept. 20.

The first installment of the trilogy’s legendary tale — which takes place amidst the furor of mythical ancient wars between humans, immortals and monsters — depicts the rise and fall of King Zhou, the villainous final ruler of the Shang dynasty. After falling prey to the whims of a conniving fox demon and his own thirst for power, the king devolves into a brutal tyrant who incurs the very wrath of heaven for his misdeeds. After seemingly never-ending strings of bloody conflicts, humans and supernatural beings alike will wage a desperate final battle for supremacy.

“This film is truly breathtaking, with meticulous attention to detail that brings the long-beloved classic tale to life onscreen like never before,” said Doris Pfardrescher, president and CEO at Well Go USA. “From the expertly staged action to the evocative storytelling, Creation of the Gods I is a real treat for fans of classic Chinese epics.”

The acquisition was negotiated by Pfardrescher on behalf of Well Go USA and by Highlight Entertainment Co. on behalf of the filmmakers. Highlight Entertainment Co. is handling international sales. The deal was unveiled on the first day of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Kingdom of Storms was produced by Beijing Jingxi Culture and Tourism Co. Ltd., and Megke Tengre Pictures (Beijing) Co. Ltd.
