Campbell, who joined the Bombers in 2009 and was named CEO in 2014, announced his departure Wednesday morning during a meeting with employees and players, bringing an end to a 13-year relationship.
Campbell resigned less than three days after telling the media that the board and the incoming president, David Barham, would support him. In May, he was rehired as CEO on a two-year contract that would last until the end of the 2024 campaign.
He had supported the recently fired coach, Ben Rutten. Last week’s board meeting, in which Barham replaced Brasher as president, and an unsuccessful search for Alastair Clarkson turned the club on its head.
Xavier Campbell’s Top Salary Did Not Stop Essendon CEO To Resign
Xavier Campbell has been CEO since 2014, and in May he signed a two-year extension. While his net worth was not revealed, his most recent contract was reported to be $850,000 per year.
Essendon has only made the top eight six times in the last 17 seasons and has not won a final since 2004. With only two wins from nine games this season, the club is ranked 16th in the AFL.

The couple paid $920,000 for the 1888 house at 79 Gower St. five years ago. Because the house was described as “very spooky and quite gloomy,” they renovated it with a modern twist and paid $1.575 million for it.
