A man has spoken of his shock after finding himself in the middle of a manhunt just hours after burying his mother.

The 59-year-old, who previously lived in Bridlington, was staying in East Yorkshire to attend his mum’s funeral and burial in Goole when police knocked at the door looking for a man suspected of carrying out an axe attack.

The man had joined members of his family and friends at a wake in Drax on Wednesday, April 3. He returned with immediate family to the holiday cottage he had booked “in the middle of nowhere,” HullLive reports.

He said: ““Just when we thought the day was over, at 9pm, we found ourselves at the centre of a police manhunt. We were in the middle of nowhere. It was dark when we noticed eight cars, which we realised were police cars, driving slowly down the single-track lane at the bottom of the drive to the property.

“They all stopped. After a few minutes two cars drove down the drive to the cottage and firearms officers got out and came to the door.

“They asked us some questions – by this stage the police helicopter was buzzing overhead with a searchlight, supporting the officers on the ground – and we were advised to stay indoors and keep the doors locked. The search then seemed to move and focus on the area around the level crossing just east of Wressle Station.

“We understand a guy was caught just over the field from where we were. What a day, and not one to forget in a hurry.”

Humberside Police confirmed the activity around Wressle was in connection with an incident in Goole earlier that evening. A large-scale search of the town and its surrounds was conducted, supported by colleagues from the National Police Air Service, with senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Nicola Burnett saying that extra officers had been in the area, both to carry out enquiries and to offer reassurance.

A 56-year-old man has since been charged after a woman was seriously assaulted in Boothferry Road, Goole. Anthony McDonald, of Ascot Avenue, Cantley, Doncaster has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.

He appeared at Hull Magistrates’ Court on the morning of Friday, April 5, where he was remanded into custody. A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “We were called shortly after 5.25pm on Wednesday, April 3, with reports that a man had allegedly assaulted a woman with what was believed to be an axe.

“Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are thought to be potentially life-threatening, where she currently remains in a critical condition.”
