A big-budget live-action adaptation of a cult Nickelodeon animated fantasy series, the return of a sports docuseries that transformed the global appeal of Formula 1, a new animated feature written by the incomparable Charlie Kaufman, and another season of a reality dating show that inspires equal parts love and hate on social media are among the standout projects hitting Netflix in February.

Netflix’s big feature release this month is the animated film Orion and the Dark, which debuts Feb. 2. Written by Charlie Kaufman, the celebrated scribe behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation, the film is an adaptation of Emma Yarlett’s children’s book about an anxious kid who is scared of the dark. The Hollywood Reporter‘s review described Orion and the Dark as a film that “hilariously and movingly [taps] into typical childhood anxieties” and is “infused with ample wit of both the visual and verbal variety for adults.” The voice cast includes Jacob Tremblay, Paul Walter Hauser, Angela Bassett, Colin Hanks and, in a treat for everyone, Werner Herzog.

On Feb. 14, in what has become a Valentine’s Day tradition, Netflix releases the new season of its popular reality dating series Love Is Blind. The sixth season will see a new set of singles from Charlotte, North Carolina head optimistically into the pods to find their soul mates.

Launching on Feb. 22 is Netflix’s ambitious, and expensive-looking, live-action adaptation of the phenomenally popular Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The eight-episode fantasy series follows Aang, the young Avatar, as he learns to master the four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) to restore balance to a world threatened by the Fire Nation. Newcomer Gordon Cormier plays Aang, and the cast includes Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh, Ken Leung as Commander Zhao, Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Kiawentiio as Katara and Ian Ousley as Sokka.

Netflix’s sports docuseries Formula 1: Drive to Survive returns on Feb. 23. Season six takes the action to the 2023 F1 season, with Spanish racing legend Fernando Alonso taking the empty seat at Aston Martin and Las Vegas Grand Prix making its debut, with the race held in November on a new street track across the iconic Las Vegas Strip.

Movies added to Netflix in February include American Assassin, Anaconda, Fury, The Great Gatsby (2013), Horrible Bosses 2, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Moneyball, Ready Player One, The Other Boleyn Girl, Pacific Rim, Something’s Gotta Give and Tom and Jerry (2021).
