An Indiana State Police (ISP) trooper James Bailey was killed on 3 March 2023. According to ISP Police, he tragically passed away when a suspect struck him with a vehicle on Interstate 69.
On Friday around 4:30 pm, James was assisting troopers in dealing with traffic delays caused by weather-related crashes near the 326-mile marker south of Auburn. When he became aware of a high-speed vehicle, he used stop sticks to calm down the car.

ISP Trooper James Bailey Death And Obituary
ISP trooper James Bailey was killed on Friday (3 March 2023) while trying to stop a high-speed vehicle. He was 50 years old.
According to Indiana State Police, Trooper James was assisting troopers in dealing with traffic delays caused by weather-related crashes near the 326-mile marker South of Auburn at 4:30 pm Friday.
At that point, Bailey became aware of a person evading a Fort Wayne Police Department officer while traveling at high speed on I-69. So, he used stop sticks, trying to calm down the car chase.
Then, the suspect vehicle ran over Bailey. The Trooper was seriously injured. He was rushed to a local hospital. However, medical professionals pronounced him dead soon after reaching the hospital. He died from his injuries.
While expressing his sadness, the State Police Superintendent said they would unite to support Bailey’s family, friends, and loved ones.
“This is a sorrowful day for the entire family of the Indiana State Police. As always, we will unite to support Trooper Bailey’s loved ones, friends, and colleagues, “according to Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter.
Suspect Terry Dewaine Sands II Arrested
The suspect who ran over Trooper James Bailey has been arrested. The suspect is identified as Terry Dewaine Sands II. He is reportedly from Marion, Indiana and is 42 as of 2023.
No further details about the suspected culprit have been kept confidential for security purposes.
After the collision, he was arrested and charged with resisting law enforcement while endangering an officer’s life, a level 2 Felony. James Bailey’s suspected murderer Terry Dewaine Sands II, is imprisoned in the DeKalb County Jail.
The inquiry is still being conducted. The Dekalb County Prosecutor will examine Sands II’s case to determine whether additional charges are necessary. Let’s hope justice will be served soon in the coming days.
