The Los Angeles Chargers are in the midst of a rebuild and the moves they have made in the offseason have made it clear they are looking for a clean start.

The team hired a new head coach, Jim Harbaugh, and the first moves saw them trade Keenan Allen, along with the departures of Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler.

One more fight, now even Cowboys fans try to stop one of their own at the game against ChargersRoberto Ortega

After winning a national championship with the University of Michigan, Harbaugh decided to return to the NFL and become the new coach of quarterback Justin Herbert.

The team had to get rid of several of its top talents to free up the salary cap. That means, for now, Herbert has second-year player Quentin Johnson as his best receiver after being the team’s first-round pick in 2023 and a huge disappointment last season.

Sports Illustrated notes that the good news for Chargers is the position they have for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft: fifth overall, and one of the few teams not in a hurry for a new passer, which opens things up for Harbaugh.

“There’s talk of four quarterbacks in the first four picks,” Harbaugh said. “If that happens, then that pick really becomes the number one pick in the draft.

“If four quarterbacks go in the first four picks, it’s no longer like the fifth pick, it’s like the No. 1 pick in the draft for teams that already have a great quarterback.”

Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers’ optimism

Harbaugh’s alternative ways of thinking have been on display early in his tenure as head coach of the Chargers. Earlier this week he declared that his new job was the best he’d ever had, just a few months after starting. We’d probably all be happier if we lived in Jim Harbaugh’s world.

As far as his vision for the Chargers’ draft position, he could end up getting it right. It’s almost certain that the first three picks in the draft will be quarterbacks.

Caleb Williams will go first, probably followed by Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye regardless of the order. The questions start at that No. 4 spot. The Arizona Cardinals are in that spot and, like Los Angeles, don’t need a quarterback with Kyler Murray under contract.

However, they are in a prime spot to trade down and accumulate picks because JJ McCarthy is gaining a lot of momentum as one of the top five picks in the draft.

It is realistic to expect someone, like the Minnesota Vikings, to move up to the No. 4 spot and take the quarterback who was coached at Michigan by Harbaugh.

At that point, the Chargers will have the No. 5 overall and can pick any of the top non-quarterback prospects available. That’s an enviable position.

Chargers, free to pick a receiver or offensive lineman

There are several excellent wide receiver and offensive lineman prospects to choose from. Given how barren the team’s roster is outside of Herbert, it will be hard to go wrong with either, because either pick will result in a talent upgrade for the team.

Of course, it’s possible that things won’t work out that way. A lot can change between now and the first round on April 25. But the Chargers are in a good place regardless of how the first four picks play out.
