Despite the importance that Oscar de la Hoya once had in Saul Canelo Alvarez’s life, the Mexican fighter once again assured that he isn’t interested in being close to the now boxing promoter.

De la Hoya was an important figure in the tapatío’s boxing career, getting him his first multi-million dollar contracts and placing him among the world’s boxing elite several years ago.

Oscar de la Hoya assures that he would easily beat ‘Canelo’ Alvarez when he was in his best momentTikTok

However, for some time now, the poisoned darts between the two have been a constant, and everything was rekindled following the announcement of the fight between Canelo and Jaime Munguia, which will be held on May 4 in Las Vegas.

Throughout the entire event, Canelo and Golden Boy didn’t even turn to look at one another despite the fact that it was De La Hoya himself who helped set up the show. This provoked a series of attacks from one against the other.

“I’m not interested in being friends with him, I’m fine where I am, I have nothing to do with him and I wish him all the best and that’s it, but I don’t want him in my life, I don’t want him near me, I don’t need those vibes in my life,” said Canelo when asked about his relationship with the man who was his promoter a few years ago.

Reasons for the rift between Canelo and De la Hoya

One of the reasons for the feud after they both won several big paychecks over the years, was an apparent breach of contract issue in 2020 which threw the relationship into the bin with lawsuits from both parties.

In addition, De la Hoya’s statements about Canelo’s need to change handler and leave behind his relationship with Eddy Reynoso, was something that Canelo did not put up with and added fuel to the fire, as recalled by the portal mediotiempo.com.

“One day a reporter asked me if I thought Canelo needed another trainer and I said maybe that was a good idea, because I had seven trainers in my career and I learned things from each trainer, they all taught me something new,” De la Hoya explained. “I told him that maybe Eddy Reynoso can get some help.”

Alvarez not only trusts Reynoso blindly, but he is also one of his best friends and considers him like a second father for all that the manager has done in the brilliant career of the boxer and multi-time world champion.
