Emkay group founder Mustapha Kamal dies at the age of 73
The founder of the Emkay Group, Tan Sri Mustapha Kamal Abu Bakar, passed away at the age of 73. According to the sources, he died at the National Heart Institute at 7.45 am and is planned to be buried at Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery.
His daughter, Felina Mustapha Kamal, said in a statement that her father’s body is still at the National Heart Institute.

Kamal was born in Kg Changkat, Pusing, Perak on March 8, 1949. He studied history and completed his graduation from Universiti Malaya in the year 1970.
He started his career in civil services as an assistant district officer in the Ulu Selangor district. Later, he was promoted to deputy commissioner in the lands and mines department. He left civil services afterward.
He then started working as a managing director of Shah Alam properties in Sdn Bhd. Kamal founded Emkay in 1983 and its first project was in Taman Meru Jaya. Emkay’s first private property development project was in Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh.
Since then, Emkay has proved to be an extremely profitable company and is best known for its development in Cyberjaya, which is estimated to be RM2.5bil.
During his career, Mustapha was called the ‘King of Affordable housing’ because many people could afford the housing plans developed by his company.
He also co-founded MK Land holdings Berhad, which later became one of Malaysia’s largest capitalized property companies with an estimated total value of RM1.2bil.
