Late one November night in 2013, a deeply religious young woman paced the footpath outside her home, distressed and looking for help.

The 18-year-old living in Sydney’s west came from a family scarred by years of domestic abuse. The month before, an apprehended violence order had been finalised against her father, following an assault that had left her unconscious.

After the latest family argument, the woman had gone outside to make calls, including one to a bishop at her new church.

His name was Mar Mari Emmanuel.

Bishop Emmanuel, 53, was thrust into the spotlight last month after he was stabbed at the pulpit of his western Sydney church while conducting a live-streamed sermon, in what police have labelled a terror attack.

Now we’ve been granted access to a court transcript detailing a previously unreported chapter of the bishop’s past.

One-third of motorists killed on Queensland roads in the first four months of 2024 were motorcyclists, despite only a small fraction of road users travelling on two wheels.

Between January and April, 94 people died in crashes on Queensland roads. Of those, 31 were motorcyclists – a 46.2 per cent increase from the previous five-year average.

Those stark figures have prompted the RACQ, Queensland’s peak motorists’ body, to urge motorcyclists to “drop the ego, not the bike” in a new safety push to be launched today.

“We estimate around 280,000 RACQ members ride motorcycles, and most would agree it’s a fun and cost-effective way to get around, but it’s a riskier mode of transport than a car,” said RACQ road safety manager Joel Tucker.

Tucker said most motorcyclists who had died were male, as men were prone to taking more risks.

Almost two in three Queenslanders volunteered in the past 12 months but the volunteering rate has dropped by 10 per cent in three years, a new report has found.

Volunteering Queensland’s report found about one in three people surveyed wanted to do more.
But it costs volunteers $15.57 for every hour they give up their time, an increase from $4.76 in 2020, with volunteers shouldering 76 per cent of this cost.

However, for every dollar invested in volunteering, there was an economic return of $4.70.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has called on the prime minister to speak to the Chinese president after a fighter jet dropped flares in front of an Australian Navy helicopter in international waters.

The near-catastrophic incident occurred about 7.30pm (AEST) on Saturday during a routine operation in the Yellow Sea off South Korea.

Dutton said it wasn’t the first time the Chinese military had taken things too far, pointing to an incident when Australian naval divers were injured after sonar pulses were detected from a Chinese warship.

Speaking on Nine’s Today program, Dutton said he wanted peace to prevail but countries like China had to follow the international rule of law.

“I think the prime minister has to pick the phone up and express our deep concern because at the moment we’ll see a response from China to deny that it happened or that we had made a mistake,” he said.

“We’ve seen this move before, but it is at some stage going to escalate, perhaps by accident, but it’ll be that unintended consequence and Australian Defence Force personnel will pay with their lives, and we don’t want to see that.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labelled Bonza entering voluntary administration as “very disappointing” but hopes more low-cost airlines enter the market.

Bonza entered voluntary administration last week after the company that owns its aircraft lessor tried to repossess its planes, leaving hundreds of travellers stranded across the country.

“Bonza of course, has now ended its voluntary administration, and it’s very disappointing that that has occurred,” Albanese told ABC Capricornia radio this morning.

He said consumer rights were being considered as part of the aviation white paper that was being undertaken.

The prime minister said he hoped there were more low-cost airlines that entered the market, despite issues Bonza faced.

“I hope there is,” he said.

“But what we have seen over a period of time is that the aviation industry is a really tough industry, but we have seen a range over recent decades, of cheap airlines form, and keep going for a little while and not last.”

The prime minister said he found it extraordinary how many airlines don’t last, but “that’s the nature of that industry.”
