For years, we’ve been told that AI is the future and that it will help speed up and streamline everything from how we work to vital surgery and medical care – in other words, a very good thing indeed. This is why many were left shocked and bewildered this month as ‘the godfather of AI’ warned of the dangers of this technology, leading to discussions about reigning it in.

This article looks at this new development and what it might mean for the gambling sector.

Have We Created a Monster?

This month, Geoffrey Hinton announced his resignation from Google and a shocking warning. Having been deeply involved in pioneering research into neural networks and deep learning, Dr. Hinton’s work was a significant factor in AI systems such as ChatGPT. It was, therefore, alarming to hear him virtually renounce his work as he warned of the dangers of artificial intelligence. In his statement, Dr. Hinton said, “Right now, what we’re seeing is things like GPT-4 eclipses a person in the amount of general knowledge it has, and it eclipses them by a long way. In terms of reasoning, it’s not as good, but it does already do simple reasoning. And given the rate of progress, we expect things to get better quite fast. So we need to worry about that. This is just a kind of worst-case scenario, kind of a nightmare scenario – you can imagine, for example, some bad actor like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin decided to give robots the ability to create their sub-goals. I’ve concluded that the kind of intelligence we’re developing is very different from the intelligence we have. We’re biological systems, and these are digital systems. And the big difference is that with digital systems, you have many copies of the same set of weights, the same model of the world. All these copies can be learned separately but share their knowledge instantly. So it’s as if you had 10,000 people, and whenever one person learned something, everybody automatically knew it. And that’s how these chatbots can know so much more than anyone.”

Dr. Hinton finished his speech by suggesting we must take a step back regarding AI development, with more regulation needed. Needless to say, this has launched some very serious conversations within government departments worldwide.

Gambling on the Survival of AI

As with many other industries, the gambling sector has embraced artificial intelligence in several ways, and we’ll look at some of these in this section:

Predictive Analytics

In 2023, most sports betting apps will use AI-powered predictive analytics to analyze how users behave and, therefore, tweak the user experience to keep punters on the app longer. This ultimately means that customers are offered a more personalized and enjoyable experience, and this is, therefore, a valuable tool for gambling companies.

Natural Language Processing

AI

Another AI tool used to improve the user experience is Natural Language Processing (NLP). This form of AI is used to interpret and understand what customers are asking for and simply present answers and navigation. By saving the user time, betting companies can help to increase engagement on their apps.

Accuracy of Odds

When it comes to gambling – particularly sports betting, the calculation of odds is incredibly important – and something that used to be a fairly long-winded, laborious process. AI allows odds to be calculated more accurately – and at lightning speed, meaning that sports betting companies can analyze and update odds even as a game like, for example, Crash money game or match progresses, thereby maximizing their profits.

Cards on the Table

Bricks-and-mortar casinos have been making good use of AI for a while now, as it has proven to be invaluable in their security efforts. AI technology can help eliminate cheating by analyzing video footage of players and gaming tables and providing facial recognition software to help identify criminals and those suspected of cheating.

As casinos tighten their belts and employ fewer staff members, cameras and AI technology are crucial in scanning the casino floor and gaming tables to quickly and efficiently deal with anybody attempting to cheat the house.

The Power of Good

Artificial intelligence is also used within the gambling industry to help prevent users from falling victim to gambling addiction. AI technology is used to analyze the behavior of gamblers to identify the triggers that may lead to problems. This tech can then send alerts to personnel, who can either suspend the user’s account or limit their activity within the site or the app.

Problem gambling is an increasingly big issue for governments worldwide, working on several initiatives and legislation. Few people will deny that artificial intelligence is an extremely important part of this.

Should the Gambling Sector be Worried?

While Dr. Hinton’s words have certainly given many people food for thought, the betting and gambling sector doesn’t need to panic just yet. Much of Dr. Hinton’s warning centers around dangerous AI-related activities, such as spreading fake news and the generation of intelligent beings superior to human beings.

As things stand, gambling companies are largely using artificial intelligence for data gathering and security purposes, and it’s unlikely that governments will seek to stop this. Instead, there’s likely to be a lot of discussion about the creation of new, even more advanced artificial intelligence technology, which may reasonably be deemed to present a danger to our way of life. We can also expect to see further legislation regulating manufacturing and selling AI devices to businesses and the general public, which has been somewhat lacking in most countries.

Getting the Balance Right With AI

The gambling sector has come a long way since sports bets were gathered at an event and noted in a little book. For the most part, technology has been a win-win for both gambling customers and companies, as increased efficiency and an improved user experience can only be considered a good thing. As with everything, however, the correct regulations must be in place to ensure that customers are protected. We can expect governments worldwide to take a much closer look at new AI technology very shortly.

Up to 5.8% of adults worldwide report suffering from some form of gambling addiction or problem, and this can be devastating for both sufferers and their loved ones. Should you or somebody you know be struggling with problem gambling, there is help available from charities such as GamCare and GambleAware
