Game 4 of the 2023 World Series at Chase Field did not go the way many in the sold-out crowd hoped — or expected — it would go. Trailing 2-1 in the series, the Arizona Diamondbacks found themselves trailing 11-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning after an early-game bullpen implosion saw the Texas Rangers build a huge lead.
In response, many in attendance began to construct paper airplanes and toss them from the “nosebleed” seats high atop the artificial turf diamond at Arizona‘s ballpark. And when called out by the public address announcer, the fans didn’t seem too eager to straighten out and fly right.
Rangers blast their way to huge lead
Arizona was hoping to even the World Series at two games apiece on Tuesday night — but Texas effectively took all the drama out of it by the third inning. The Rangers had scored 10 runs before the Diamondbacks even made it through the order once. Every run came with two out, while stars Marcus Semien and Corey Seager left the yard, their home runs driving in five baserunners.
With the game bereft of any intrigue for the home fans, paper planes began making their way onto the field in sixth inning. At least two actually reached the playing surface — prompting public address announced Chuck Drago to tell off the unruly attendees.
The D-backs mounted a late rally, scoring the game’s final six runs, but the comeback came too little, too late. The Rangers won 11-7, and are now one win away from its first-ever championship.
