Erik Ten Hag says nothing has changed over Jadon Sancho’s future at Manchester United despite the winger’s progress on loan at Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho has been back at the club that sold him to United for £73million three years ago after falling out with Ten Hag over a social media post earlier this season. The 24-year-old was made to train on his own for four months and then returned to Dortmund in January.

The German club reached the Champions League semi-finals with victory over Atletico Madrid in midweek, and Sancho is clearly enjoying his football again.

But asked how that might affect a possible return to United next season, Ten Hag hinted strongly that the player’s refusal to apologise for the post criticising his manager was the main sticking point rather than his form.

Asked if anything has changed over the winger’s situation, the United boss replied: ‘No, but we know Jadon Sancho is a fantastic football player, so that is not a surprise for us, that is not the issue.

‘Of course, I follow international football and follow the players on loan at other clubs. It was a fantastic game, Dortmund against Atletico Madrid. It was a great performance from Dortmund and for Jadon it’s good news, he made his contribution to the result for Dortmund.’

Meanwhile, Ten Hag has admitted that Casemiro has ‘struggled’ this season but backed the Brazilian to rediscover his best form.

The former Real Madrid star was instrumental in Ten Hag’s first season at United, but his levels have dropped off this term and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp said after last weekend’s draw at Bournemouth that he looked like he was playing in Soccer Aid.

Ten Hag said: ‘I think we needed a No.6 when I arrived here and last season Casemiro was fantastic. I don’t think he ever scored so many goals as well but as a six, a holding midfielder, a strategist, he was so important for the team.

‘This season he struggled with a bad injury he never had before, but he always wins in his career. Everywhere he was there will be success, and I trust he will give his success. I know he will need games, he will be better and I’m very confident about him. He is a fighter, that’s why he also won big trophies and he’s a very important player.’
